11 perfume layering combinations you should know about…

This has become one of my favourite ways to rediscover fragrances I already love. Not because they need layering, but because it’s one of the most personal ways to shape a fragrance into something that feels entirely your own.

I’m rarely trying to reinvent a perfume. Instead, I’m looking for a subtle shift in perspective. A little more texture. A greener landscape. A softer silhouette. A brighter horizon.

This collection of pairings feels very suited to August to me. Sun-warmed fig trees, herb gardens at their peak, polished leather, cooling tea, Mediterranean coastlines, golden evenings and the first gentle hint that summer is beginning to soften into autumn.

Which pairing would you try first?

✨ BDK Parfums Oud Paradisio × Nishane Papilefiko
✨ Dior Beauty Official Cuir Saddle × Vilhelm Parfumerie Stockholm 1978
✨ Clive Christian Matsukita × Diptyque L’Eau des Hespérides

Matcha & Green Tea Fragrances that actually smell like matcha or green tea…

For me personally, matcha in a perfume shouldn’t smell like a three pumps of vanilla, two-thirds steamed milk and a dash of something that could pass as matcha kind of situation, and the same for green tea. I know this is completely down to preference, but if a perfume claims to be a green tea scent, it should have a slight bitterness, an earthy edge and green nuances with perhaps some florals or light airy sweetness.

These scents achieve that on my skin, the deeper scent profiles, true to tea, true to matcha, something ritualistic rather than candied and sugared. Okay yes, there may be slight sweetness or a creaminess to one or two of them (if you know, you know), or the actual focus of the scent might not be green tea or matcha, but here those notes are immediately identifiable

Which fragrances would you add to this list?
✨ Teo Cabanel Je Ne Sais Quoi
✨ D’Annam Matcha Soft Serve
✨Miller Harris Tea Tonique Extrait
✨ Aesop Virere
✨ L’Atelier Parfum Matcha Crème
✨ Ormonde Jayne Champaca
✨ Kilian Princess Eau Fraiche
✨ Molton Brown Tea Ceremony
✨ Fascent I Fig You

What August smells like to me 🌾

August is when I start reaching for fragrances with a little more texture. Summer isn’t over, but there’s a subtle shift in the air. Sun warmed herbs, gardens at their peak, evenings arrive a little earlier, still reaching for fig lf course, and golden warmth begins to replace bright freshness.

This is the month where cereal notes really come into their own. Wheat and barley are some of the most underrated notes in perfumery, bringing a soft, sun-warmed richness that’s comforting without feeling heavy. They add texture, warmth and a quiet elegance that feels completely at home in late summer.

These are the fragrances I reach for now.
Golden, airy and nostalgic. Scents that capture sunlit fields, dry grasses, warm skin and the feeling of summer beginning to slow.

Nothing tropical.
Nothing overly sweet.
Just fragrances that feel like August.

What fragrances are you reaching for this month?

Fragrances for late summer in the wheat & barley fields 🌾

Wheat and barley might not be the first notes you think of when you picture August, but they deserve far more attention. They bring a beautiful texture to fragrance – golden, sun-warmed, softly toasted and quietly comforting. Sometimes they smell like fresh grain swaying in the fields, sometimes like warm bread, oat milk, hay or buttery pastries, adding depth without density.

If you’re looking for fragrances that capture the slower, golden side of late summer, these are some to consider...

Fragrances featured:
• Dries Van Noten – Velvet Violet
• Hima Jomo – Autumn in Lhoka
• Tom Ford – Vanille Fatale
• Thameen – Florentine Diamond
• DS & Durga – Sexy Viking
• Régime des Fleurs – Fauna
• Pictura – Vigil
• L’Artisan Parfumeur – Jour de Fête
• Kilian – Old Fashioned

One of Korea’s most exciting fragrance houses has officially arrived in the UK.

Until now, Nown Unown has only been available in Korea and Taiwan, making Scented in Glasgow an exclusive retailer to stock the collection.

What drew me to the brand wasn’t just the fragrances themselves, but the philosophy behind them. Nown Unown believes fragrance doesn’t simply live on the skin...it lingers in spaces, in memory, and in the traces we leave behind. Rather than chasing trends, every creation is designed to stand the test of time.

The collection is made up of six editions, each exploring a different human experience: Wet Forest, Bloom, Zen, Dreams, Appearance and Innocence.

A brand and concept with a very sepcial point of view. Thoughtful, beautifully executed and rooted in storytelling rather than spectacle.

Midnight Pretenders, Clément Marx’s latest creation for Neil Jacquet

Let me start by saying that I am a great admirer and fan of Clément’s, I find his approach to perfumery to be extremely artistic, creative and pure in a very interesting way with each fragrance in his repertoire.

There is part of me that associates this with the delightfulness of Afternoon Tea at Fortum & Mason, the elegance and familiar sophistication of it through the bloom in its florals, but at the same time, there is a sublime tranquility and mystery to it, a ritual appreciation for tea but at dusk. Opening unquestionably floral with a very prominent cherry blossom, but with the identifiably uniqueness of Ylang-Ylang, it creates the image of blossoms in season carried in the breeze. But where this fragrance gets truly interesting is in its heart...three incredibly poignant notes in how identifiable they are in perfumery, and here I feel each one is allowed to shine individually as well as in a layered composition. The calming, almost dry woody nature of chamomile, the soft rice like clarity of Sake in its pristine transparency and then the serene, meditative softness of Oolong tea with slight smoky nuances. Together they create something really rather magical, and completely inimitable.

What a masterpiece. It is a rare thing when a perfume utterly captivates you immediately and can be likened to nothing else, especially as someone who samples so many on a daily basis, but this one is one of them, without a doubt

Notes : Cherry Blossom, Ylang Ylang, Pink Pepper | Sake, Oolong Tea, Chamomile | Sandalwood, Vetiver, Salt

My favourite two fragrances from different brands in my collection. ✨

Trying to narrow each house down to just two fragrances is much harder than it sounds. These are the scents I find myself favouring the most right now... although knowing me, that could all change with the next discovery, a forgotten favourite or a brilliant new release.

What are your favourite fragrances from these brands? And which house should I do next?
Links in stories and bio. ✨

L’Entropiste – Jodhpur 6am & White Blood | Two fragrances that perfectly capture what makes L’Entropiste so compelling. Jodhpur 6am is calm, contemplative and transportive, while White Blood takes a completely different direction with something far more abstract and intriguing. Both are beautifully original.

Arquiste – A Grove By the Sea & Aleksandr | Arquiste has an incredible ability to tell stories through fragrance. A Grove By the Sea is one of my favourite Mediterranean-inspired scents, whilst Aleksandr is refined, textured and endlessly fascinating. Two completely different styles, both unmistakably Arquiste.

Mind Games – Vieri & Counterplay | Vieri, massively underrated, a citrus green scent I would recommend to those who struggle with green, whilst Counterplay is effortlessly polished with a distinctive modern character.

Juliette Has a Gun – Ego Stratis & Ex Vetiver | Fresh fragrances done exceptionally well. Ego Stratis has become one of my favourite everyday reaches, whilst Ex Vetiver is crisp, elegant and one of the most wearable modern vetiver fragrances I’ve come across.

Bon Parfumeur – 204 Velvet Fig & 005 Riviera Absolue | Two very different interpretations of freshness. 204 Velvet Fig is creamy, green and an exceptional fig interpretation, whilst 005 Riviera Absolue captures aromatic Mediterranean landscapes so uniquely.
