20 years ago today I graduated from beauty school.
After a day long practical exam on a day that was hotter than hell, I achieved my CIDESCO diploma -
The finale of my studies.

I look back with great fondness of this time.
Me, throwing caution and a bit of common sense to the wind to pack in a reasonably successful job to study beauty for a year full time.
But it had always been an itch I needed to scratch so to speak.
Having worked in jobs that I knew were not for me, I needed to find my place.
I definitely found it when I stepped foot in college that first day.

I wholeheartedly threw myself into my studies, studying hours every night and no one was safe in the house from my waxing spatula!

I wanted to know EVERYTHING and I did put a great amount of pressure on myself to ensure I did the best and to be the best I could. That sneaky perfectionism can be a problem sometimes!

I loved every minute of those 10 months and when I graduated at the ripe age of 27 (it’s never too late to start something new!) I knew I’d made the right decision.
I was already employed before I left college and began learning the industry from the ground up.
Great experiences (and not so great experiences) channelled me into eventually opening my own business.

The industry has changed so much in those 20 years.
Gosh I remember when gel polish was first released, the ‘Brazilian’ was a taboo treatment and spray tans had no guide colour 😱

Like everything else in the world it’s evolving fast!!!
But I’m having to find myself satisfied with my small wedge.
Sticking to my ethos, that was with me from my first day when I slipped on that stunning white coat dress (complete with shoulder pads!) my navy court shoes and sensible cardigan IYKYK; do and give my best for my client at all times.

I recall a client asking me a few years back ‘Do you love your job?’
I replied, ‘Absolutely, you cannot successfully do this job unless you love it’.

What a privilege it is to be in this space.
