We see a lot of babies at NGCO. Feeding concerns affect a lot of parents. This research provides evidence that a deep latch is key to comfortable and effective breastfeeding. This 2026 cross-sectional ultrasound study of breastfeeding biomechanics found depth of latch and tongue mobility linked to milk-flow rates and pain scores. New finding: a link between severity of reflux disease and rate of milk transfer. Free download here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/42192456/

🤔 MYTH vs FACT

MYTH: "I'll just wait for it to go away."

FACT: Many aches and pains improve when the underlying cause is addressed, but ignoring them can sometimes allow the problem to become more persistent.

If you've been putting up with the same discomfort for weeks or months, it may be worth getting it checked.

How long have you been living with that nagging ache?

🦵🏼🦵🏼The Knee 🦵🏼🦵🏼

A common thing we see in the clinic is people complaining of knee pain. It's almost as common as low back pain and something that practitioners are very used to seeing and diagnosing the cause.

Did you know knee pain could be caused by so many things? Bursitis, osteoarthritis, ligament pain, knee cap tracking, muscle strain, bone pain, tendonitis and muscle imbalance are some of the most common things we see.

As part of an initial appointment, your practitioner will undertake some orthopaedic tests to try and ascertain the cause of your pain. Most of the time we can then move on to treatment which usually consists of soft tissue work, mobilisation, manipulation, laser, ultrasound and then home care exercises and rehabilitation advice.

Sometimes we discover that your discomfort is likely being caused by something that needs further investigation e.g. cartilage tear or ligament rupture. In these cases we will refer you back to your GP or to the most appropriate provider with information from us to ensure you get the help you need.

The main thing is, don't put up with that knee ni**le. It's always best to get help and answers.

Infant Feeding Issues

Having difficulties around feeding with your baby is common but not normal. Issues might be around latch (bottle or breast), wind, colic type pain or generalised unsettled behaviour. It's common for babies to like to be held especially in the early weeks and months. However, that shouldn't mean that they are angry and crying whilst being held.

Colic is common and can mean a lot of crying particularly from the early evening onwards. Research would say that this often peaks and then begin to diminish by around 16 weeks of age. That's a long time to be uncomfortable in the meantime.

Paediatric trained practitioners will discuss your baby's history with you to see if there is an underlying contributing factor that might need addressing. For some this might be a tongue tie whilst for others it might be a dietary intolerance or mechanical issue e.g. neck pain, affecting comfort levels.

A thorough infant assessment can be beneficial for many reasons. Please get in touch if you have further questions.
