The Neurodivergent Barber missed the Autism Hero Awards because I was busy running a marathon for the National Autistic Society, so it was really special waking up this morning and seeing a post from Anna Kennedy.

When we look back, none of this would have been possible without the incredible support and trust from Sarah, her kids and Scott Bousfield being part of the team.

They’ve helped me grow not only Craig grow a barber, but as a person. Through their patience, honesty, and encouragement, they’ve helped me improve my skills working with autistic clients and continue making the shop a more accessible, understanding, and welcoming place for everyone in our community.

Every lesson, every conversation, and every small breakthrough has shaped the way we do things at Craig’s Barbershop today.

Accessibility and inclusion will always be bigger than awards. Seeing someone feel safe, comfortable, and accepted in the chair means more than anything.

What an achievement 🏅

Today, Craig completed the marathon in an incredible 4:27 on a course known for its challenging inclines ⛰️

The marathon was a true test of resilience, determination, and mindset, and Craig pushed through every mile to reach the finish line. Everyone at Craig’s Barbershop is incredibly proud of the effort, commitment, and achievement.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported, donated, cheered, and sent messages of encouragement throughout the journey, the support has meant so much ❤️

Recovery mode officially starts now… although the stairs might be a challenge for the next few days 😂

🏃‍♂️ In around an hour I’ll be starting the Leeds Marathon!

This is not only about raising money for the National Autistic Society, a charity doing incredible work supporting autistic people and their families across the UK 💙, but also a huge personal challenge for me as well.

Training, preparation, and pushing myself out of my comfort zone has all led to today, and I’m proud to be taking this on for such an important cause.

We are happy to share that Craig's Barber Shop is shortlisted for our 2026 ‘Heart of Gold’ award.

Craig’s Barbershop is more than just a place for a haircut, it’s a safe, inclusive space built to support neurodivergent and disabled individuals who often struggle with traditional barbershop environments.

With a calm, understanding approach and a focus on reducing fear and anxiety, they tailor every appointment to the individual.

Their mission is simple: to break down barriers, build trust, and make sure everyone has access to a positive, comfortable haircut experience.

Craig's Barbershop is proud to support Craig as he takes on the challenge of the Leeds Marathon.

This marathon means far more than just a number on a race bib. It represents the mental discipline, resilience, and determination needed to push through one of the UK’s most challenging marathon courses. Craig chose Leeds because it will test both body and mind every step of the way.

He is putting himself through this challenge to raise money for National Autistic Society and to recognise the daily struggles faced by families and individuals with autism, who continue to show incredible strength and resilience every single day.

On 10th May, when the miles get harder, Craig will keep going with them in mind.

This one means a lot. Everything we do is about creating a safe, understanding space for neurodivergent and disabled individuals who often find haircuts overwhelming or inaccessible. To have that recognised on this level is something I’m incredibly proud of.

Everyone is welcome at Craig’s Barbershop 🤝

Accessibility isn’t an add-on for us, it’s part of who we are.

We have a portable access ramp in place to make sure wheelchair users can enter the shop comfortably and confidently. No barriers, just a warm welcome.

Inside the salon, we’ve created a sensory-friendly space on the shop floor for younger neurodivergent clients who may find traditional haircuts overwhelming. Haircuts don’t have to happen in the chair, we meet each person where they feel most comfortable.

We understand that the smells, sounds, and busy environment of a working barbershop can be a lot. That’s why we take the time to adapt, reduce overwhelm, and create a calmer, more supportive experience.

Because everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and included when getting a haircut 💈

In just 6 weeks, Craig from Craig’s Barbershop will be taking on the Leeds Marathon 🏃‍♂️

Craig is running to raise money for the National Autistic Society, a cause closely connected to the work he does every day supporting neurodivergent individuals and families.

This is a huge challenge, both physically and mentally, but one that reflects the passion and commitment Craig brings to the community.
