TPO nail ingredient ban in EU

You may have read recently in the mainstream media about a product called TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) Up until now TPO has been a common ingredient many UV gel nail products. TPO has recently been banned as a cosmetic ingredient in the EU. A similar ban has not yet come into force in the UK but may do so next year.

What is TPO & why the ban?

TPO is a photoinitiator which means it is one of the ingredients that helps light cured nail products to harden when exposed to UV light. It is therefore not found in nail varnish, only in UV light-cured nail coatings.

The reason for the ban is that TPO has been reclassified as CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction). Under it's new classification, in order to comply with EU law, it has been banned for use in all cosmetic products. It will however continue to be used in medical grade products; in dentistry for example.

Is TPO In Bristol Beauty's nail products?

I am pleased to confirm that LCN Wilde-Pedique reconstruction gels do not contain any TPO. LCN gel products are manufactured in Germany and the manufacturer removed TPO from all it's UV gel products some time ago.

Artistic Colour Gloss UV Gel
Whilst there is still TPO in some Artistic products supplied in the UK, Artistic Colour Gloss UV Gel colours are TPO free.

Semilac UV Gel
Semilac Uk have confirmed that it is still in some of their products supplied in the UK and this will continue to be the case until a ban comes into force in the UK. They are however transparent regarding ingredients so I have been able to remove a small number of Semilac products from my collection that have TPO in them.

It is my understanding that the risk from very small quantities of this ingredient in a nail coating is extremely small however client safety and confidence is of utmost importance to me.

Now one of my absolute favourite treatments to do. So satisfying.

This lovely lady dropped something on her big toe a few years ago & it's never grown back properly since. A quick visit to Footworks Podiatry to have the nail trimmed and thinned & then over to me for a little reconstruction magic before her holiday.
