For lace top wigs, if you have your own hair underneath and want that natural part line - it’s important to line up your own natural parting with the parting of the wig to show your actual scalp through the lace.

Otherwise, through the lace, you’ll see your own hair underneath instead of scalp… which can be especially noticeable if you have darker hair like me.

And if you’re wearing a wig grip with a lace parting section, it’s equally important to line that lace section up with the wig’s parting too, otherwise you may see the velvet showing through the part line.

As shown in the video, I often need to adjust my own natural parting slightly underneath the wig grip to get everything lined up properly.

Of course there are other options such as silk liners or using scar tape on the inside of the cap along the part line. However, lining up my part line is my personal favourite and looks and feels the most natural to me.

But which would you choose?

Closed lace is the lighter option and sits beautifully flat. The breathable lace allows your own scalp to show through, creating a natural-looking parting.

Silk top gives you a smooth, scalp-like parting, with the knots concealed beneath the silk. The silk I’ve chosen is thinner and more breathable than a traditional silk top, although lace still feels a little lighter.

Note: Hair toppers often look most seamless when you can blend some of your own hair over the front. My hairline is too sparse to demonstrate that, so I’m showing you how they look on me without the blend.

Like wigs, toppers aren’t always perfect straight out of the box. Often they need a little styling or personalisation to make them work for you and feel like you.

If you are thinking of new hair for Christmas, now is the time to start planning.

The internet is full of opinions about wigs and hair toppers.

And most of this advice is shared with genuinely good intentions. But when you’re already overwhelmed and trying to navigate wig wearing or hair toppers for the first time, hearing so many conflicting opinions can leave you feeling even less confident than when you started. It’s something I hear time and again during consultations.

The truth is, there isn’t one universally best option.

A feature one person couldn’t live without might be completely unnecessary or even wrong for somebody else.

Someone who wears hair occasionally will have different priorities from someone who relies on theirs every day.

Some women have large collections, receive gifted pieces, rotate between them regularly or have the budget to replace/repair them more frequently. Their priorities may be very different from those of someone who owns only one or two pieces, wears them daily and needs quality and longevity to come first.

The right choice can depend on your hair loss, lifestyle, budget, how important longevity is to you, how you like to wear your hair and how much maintenance you’re comfortable with.

Even advice presented as a strict rule may only reflect one person’s experience or apply to one particular type of wig or topper.

That doesn’t mean online advice isn’t valuable. Real experiences can be incredibly helpful. But it should support your decision, not make you feel pressured into believing there is only one correct way to wear wigs or toppers.

For most people, a human hair wig or topper is a significant and deeply personal investment and the best option isn’t the one receiving the most praise online. It’s the one that works for them and helps them get on with living their life.

A consultation can help you cut through the noise, understand your options and work out what genuinely suits your individual needs.

And sometimes, the only way to discover what truly works for you is to take that first step - ask the questions, try different options and allow yourself to learn as you go. 🫶🏻

Social media can make owning a large collection of wigs or hair toppers in different colours, lengths and styles look like a typical part of wearing hair.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with collecting wigs or enjoying the freedom to change your hair whenever you fancy - I do it myself. But it isn’t the reality, or financially possible, for many women.

For most people, a human hair wig or topper is a significant investment. You may own only one or two pieces, rely on them every day and need them to last.

That’s why my role isn’t simply to help you choose the most beautiful looking hair.

It’s to help you find a piece that genuinely suits your lifestyle and priorities, set realistic expectations and give you the knowledge and aftercare support to get the best possible wear from it.

You don’t need a wardrobe full of wigs or toppers to be a “proper” wearer. You need a piece that works for you and the confidence to live your life in it.

If you rely on your hair every day, I do recommend having a backup eventually, so you’re never caught short if something happens to your main piece. But I would never pressure you to buy two at once.

If you’re new to wearing hair, I’d much rather you make sure you’re completely happy with your first piece before investing in another. We often learn more about our preferences as we go.

Many women begin with one piece and return for another once they feel confident - sometimes choosing exactly the same wig again, or the same colour in a different length or cap construction. Others decide to try something completely different.

And some happily wear the same colour and length forever.

Whether you want to change your hair sooner, later or never - it’s all okay. There is no race and no “right” way to do this. Everything should happen at your own pace and within your own comfort level.

My job will always be to support what is genuinely in your best interests and this is where a consultation can be invaluable, particularly when you’re brand new to wearing hair and still discovering what feels right for you. 🫶🏻

For years, I think I measured my own hair loss by how it looked.

Was it really that bad?
Could I still hide it?
Were there women with much worse hair loss than me?
Should I just be grateful for the hair I still had?

We convince ourselves that wigs are for some future version of us when our hair loss has finally become “bad enough” or that they’re only for people who have no hair at all.

But perhaps we’re measuring the wrong thing.

Instead of asking:

“Have I lost enough hair to wear a wig?”

Maybe ask:

“How much of my life am I already giving to my hair?”

The checking.
The hiding.
The strategic hairstyles.
Avoiding photographs.
Worrying about the weather.
Wondering whether somebody can see your scalp.
Thinking about your hair far more often than you ever wanted to.

If it’s already affecting your confidence or taking up too much space in your head, that matters.

You don’t have to wait for it to get reach a certain level before you’re allowed to explore something that might make your life easier.

And let’s not forget something else…

Plenty of women wear wigs simply because they WANT to.

For convenience. For more volume. For a new colour. Because they’re fun. Because they bloody well feel like it.

Nobody needs to earn the right to wear a wig through hair loss.

And trying one doesn’t mean committing to wearing wigs forever.

It just gives you another option.
