Over the last 3 weeks, I’ve been attending a Sensory Smart course to deepen my understanding of sensory profiling, how sensory processing can affect children, and ways we can make everyday situations feel more manageable for them.

I originally started this course to better understand and support my own child’s sensory needs, helping me learn more about his sensory input and output and how to make everyday “simple” tasks feel less overwhelming.

As I worked through the course, I found myself naturally linking so much of what I was learning back to my work and to the many lovely families I’ve met over the years. One of the biggest challenges many parents have shared with me is how difficult something as routine as a haircut can feel for their child.

This is something I’ve always genuinely understood. I’ve always believed in working with each child at their own pace, sharing relatable experiences with parents, and finding the best ways to make children feel comfortable, safe, and supported during their haircut.

This course has helped strengthen that understanding even more, giving me more knowledge, more awareness, and more strategies to better support children and their families in a way that feels calm, gentle, and tailored to their individual needs.

I’ve also shared a page from my information booklet with some helpful sensory tips and simple strategies for parents to better understand their child’s needs and perhaps try a few new approaches at home.

This is my boy, Reuben 💛

He turns 6 next month and is home educated. Reuben is autistic, has ADHD, a PDA profile, and sensory processing differences. He has come such a long way in his development, and I am so incredibly proud of him.

Understanding Reuben’s needs has been a journey of learning, adapting, and finding what works best for him. It has taken patience, flexibility, and a lot of understanding, but watching him grow in confidence and thrive in his own way has been the greatest reward.

Every child experiences the world differently, and sometimes all it takes is a little more understanding, a little more patience, and a willingness to see things from their perspective.

Knowledge really is power 💛
