🚨 VASCULAR OCCLUSION: WOULD YOU RECOGNISE IT EARLY?

A vascular occlusion is one of the most serious complications associated with dermal filler — and early recognition can make a significant difference to the outcome.

In this image, notice the developing dusky, mottled/livedoid discolouration around the upper lip and nasolabial region. Changes like this should never simply be dismissed as routine post-injection bruising.

Signs that should raise suspicion include blanching or unusual colour change, increasing or disproportionate pain, delayed capillary refill, coolness of the skin and a developing reticulated/livedoid pattern.

⚠️ Importantly, vascular compromise does not always present dramatically or immediately. The appearance can evolve, which is why practitioners need to assess the whole clinical picture rather than relying on one sign alone.

Good complication management starts long before a complication occurs. Practitioners should understand facial vascular anatomy, know how to assess tissue perfusion and have a clear emergency pathway in place before picking up a syringe.

Bruising is common. Vascular compromise is not. Know the difference.
