Perifollicular oedema 👀

I showed you this skin reaction after laser hair removal and asked if you knew what it was.
Most of you said NO — and some thought it was a laser burn.

Perifollicular oedema is a temporary redness and slight swelling that appears around individual hair follicles after laser hair removal.

It can happen on many different areas of the body — legs, back, bikini, underarms, face and anywhere else we treat.

Why can it be a good sign?

The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and creates heat within the follicle. The skin around that follicle can temporarily react with small raised red bumps or swelling.

This reaction can appear shortly after treatment and usually settles down on its own.

But is it a laser burn? No.

Perifollicular oedema usually looks like:
• small, evenly distributed bumps around the follicles
• mild redness
• slight swelling
• temporary warmth or sensitivity

A burn is different. Warning signs can include intense or worsening pain, blistering, broken skin, significant swelling, or skin colour changes that persist or worsen.

So those little red bumps you sometimes see after your laser appointment? They can simply be your skin showing a normal temporary response to the treatment. ✨
