PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a regenerative treatment that uses a small amount of your own blood to encourage healing, collagen production, or hair growth. It is commonly used in aesthetic medicine, hair restoration, and sports medicine.
How PRP works
1. Blood is taken – usually around 10–20 ml from your arm.
2. The blood is spun in a centrifuge – this separates the blood into different layers.
3. The platelet-rich plasma is collected – this layer contains a much higher concentration of platelets and growth factors than normal blood.
4. The PRP is injected into the treatment area or applied during microneedling.
What are platelets?
Platelets are tiny blood cells best known for helping blood clot, but they also release growth factors that signal the body to repair and regenerate tissue. These growth factors can stimulate collagen production, improve blood supply, and support healing.
Common aesthetic uses
* Improve fine lines and skin texture
* Reduce acne scarring
* Improve skin quality and elasticity
* Treat dark under-eye hollows (in selected patients)
* Stimulate hair growth in thinning hair
* Speed healing after treatments such as microneedling or laser procedures
What to expect
* The appointment usually takes 30–60 minutes.
* Some redness, swelling, or bruising is common for a few days.
* Results develop gradually as new collagen forms, often becoming noticeable after 4–8 weeks.
* Most people need 3 sessions, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 6–12 months depending on the indication.
Advantages
* Uses your own blood, so the risk of allergic reaction is very low.
* Minimally invasive.
* Can produce natural-looking improvements rather than adding volume like dermal fillers.
Limitations
PRP is not a miracle treatment. Results vary from person to person, and the scientific evidence is stronger for some uses (such as certain tendon injuries and some types of hair loss) than for others. It generally works best when patients are carefully selected and it is combined with appropriate treatments where needed.
