Beauty Therapist wanted — Sirens City Retreat, Durham

We're looking for a beauty therapist to join our award-winning team in the heart of Durham city centre. Part-time to start, with the genuine intention of growing into full-time as you settle in.

Nails and waxing are the heart of this role, so you'll need to be confident and capable across both.

What we're looking for

Level 3 in Beauty, or actively working towards it
Confident in nails (BIAB, gel, nail art) and waxing, intimate waxing included
High standards and real pride in your work
Warm with clients, reliable, and happy in a busy salon

I honestly despair

This is the kind of crap we deal with when we offer massage. I’m pretty sure I’m not meant to have a controversial opinion on social media as a business

But I could not careless because when we choose to offer services to men this is what we get. Now I know it’s not all men and I run a gender neutral salon because we never want men to feel unwelcome, unless you are James here and I really want him to be uncomfortable. I also won’t applaud the men who don’t make us feel uncomfortable, because thats called been normal.

But guess what in 15 years of the salon been open not one women has made us feel uncomfortable, not one have I had to decline a treatment to. For men.. around 20% get declined before even getting to the salon.

It’s the reason I have lone working policies, it’s the reason my team are taught safety measures and how it’s ok to walk straight out of a treatment if they do not feel safe

And yet again it’s the reason I have another therapist who no longer feels safe taking male massage clients.

How dare you make us feel like this, how dare you make women feel sexualised just going to work or unsafe

I’ve had men tell me they were just joking when they put s**t like this on forms. Like how?? How is making young women feel unsafe funny? Or is that how you get your fun??

And for those that don’t know this is pretty standard behaviour in the industry.

Imagine if we didn’t have pre questioners like this or James here wasn’t so confident with his requests.

We have also had friends book appointments for people (this may well be the case here) and if it is seriously get rid of those friends because you are enabling the sexualisation of women going to work

This has been passed on to the police and I will publicly shame every person who attempts to make my team feel uncomfortable every again

And if anyone wants to massage James groin let me know and I will hook you up

The salon was up for best beauty and nail salon and I was up for services to the industry.

These awards are tough! A lot of work goes in but it’s a great test to see if we are doing what we can for the salon.

It’s almost 15 years since Sirens opened and what a 15 years it’s been! So I thought this week I would share some of our history

Proof that we all start somewhere 🙌🏻
When I opened the salon I had zero plans to work in the salon, I had a crash that had damaged my neck and I wasn’t sure I had a career left as a beauty therapist.
I was working as a trainer on the floor below and I thought it would be a great idea to take on the top floor lease with no money!

I used the money from a whiplash injury and spent most of it on skincare 🫣 I literally had no idea back then.

Almost everything in the salon was from a charity shop or was a leftover from the previous business. I even varnished the MDF floors 😬

I have no idea why people came to us back then but I’m very grateful they did.

This is reception the first year and reception now. The following 15 years is a glimpse in to my chaotic brain…

One of my favourite sets in a long time!
Much softer looking in the flesh. The aim was to create a look that could pass for natural with more length on the outer corners.

I used brown lashes in the first 3rd of the lashes and a few mixed in to the edges. Our speciality is lashes that look so good it’s hard to believe they are natural but so good you would never guess they aren’t real
