It's easy to blame ourselves (or be blamed by others) for struggling with our emotions and our mental health, as if we're 'choosing' in some way to be like this. But it's not a choice: we've missed out on key learning.

I didn't used to know the first thing about assertiveness. After trauma, with a freeze response I had just tried my best to comply, to please and appease, to do what the other wanted, and that my boundaries didn't matter. I didn't have a sense of an 'edge' to me. There was a wealth of learning for me in therapy to develop that edge.
To find out more about what I mean, listen to my podcast episode 19 'How do we learn to trust people after trauma?' at www.carolynspring.com/podcasts.

🌊 What changes when you finally feel truly heard?
Sometimes we don’t realise how much we’ve been carrying until we have somewhere safe to put it down.
You might be the person who listens to everyone else, keeps the peace, and says, “I’m fine.”
But perhaps what you really need isn’t advice.
You need someone to listen.
To understand.
To give you space to untangle the thoughts and feelings you’ve been carrying alone.
Counselling isn’t about telling you what to do.
It’s about having a space where you don’t have to edit yourself.
You don’t have to know exactly what to say.
You just have to start.

The first time anyone floated the idea that my needs were valid and acceptable, and that it might even be possible (one day) to have them met, was in therapy. It was a shocking, radical thought.

🌊 “How do I know if counselling is right for me?”
It’s a common question I hear, and the truth is, you don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from counselling.
You might be finding it hard to switch your mind off.
You may be grieving a loss, feeling overwhelmed, stuck in the same patterns, or simply sensing that something doesn’t feel quite right anymore.
Perhaps you’re the person everyone relies on, but you’ve realised there’s no one looking after you.
Counselling isn’t about having all the answers before you walk through the door.
It’s about having a safe space to explore the questions.
You don’t need to know exactly what to say.
You don’t need to have a diagnosis.
And you don’t need to wait until things get worse.
If life feels heavier than it used to, or you’re carrying something that feels too much to hold on your own, counselling could be a helpful place to start.
The first session is simply a conversation. A chance for us to get to know each other, explore what’s brought you here, and decide whether I’m the right counsellor for you.
