That tight spot between your shoulder blades that just keeps coming back? ๐ฉ
You massage it. You stretch it. You roll it out.
You get some reliefโฆ and then a few days later, there it is again.
Sometimes the answer isn't simply to keep working on the same tight spot.
Tension can be influenced by how you move, how you use your body day to day, surrounding muscles, posture, training, stress and more. That's why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to massage.
During your appointment, we can look at what you're actually experiencing, what feels restricted or uncomfortable, and what your body might need โ then tailor the treatment from there.
Because sometimes it's not about digging harder into the knot. ๐ค
If this sounds familiar, I'd love to help.

Back to being a student this weekend! ๐
This weekend marks the start of my Level 5 training , alongside further training in Advanced Thai massage techniques with at .
Becoming qualified was never going to be the end of my learning. The more I work with clients, the more I realise how individual every body is โ and how important it is to have more than one way of approaching a problem.
My Level 5 training will allow me to deepen my understanding of the body and develop my assessment and treatment skills, while the Advanced Thai techniques will give me some new tools to explore around movement, mobility and tension.
I'm particularly interested in how I can bring all of this together to make treatments more individual, targeted and purposeful, rather than simply treating the same areas every time.
So, back to the classroom I go! ๐
I'm looking forward to sharing some of the things I'm learning along the way and, eventually, bringing them into your treatments at In Balance. ๐ค
What would you like to see me learn more about?
You don't need to know what treatment you need. ๐
You don't need to arrive knowing which muscles are tight, whether you need deep tissue or Thai techniques, or what I should be working on.
Just tell me what's going on.
What hurts.
What feels restricted.
What you've noticed.
What you've tried before.
What you'd like to be able to do again.
From there, it's my job to ask the questions, look at the bigger picture and decide how we approach your treatment.
Because the painful bit isn't always the problem.
And you definitely don't need to be an expert in your own anatomy before you book a massage with me. ๐
Tell me what's going on. I'll take it from there.

Massage therapy: completely professional.
The things I say? Questionable. ๐
If you've ever had a massage with me, you'll probably know exactly what I meanโฆ ๐๐
Don't worry โ there is absolutely no funny business. Just slightly questionable vocabulary. ๐๐
Would you trust me?! ๐
Two locations. One approach. ๐

So what does all of this actually mean for a treatment? ๐
One of the biggest things I took away from my TMJ & Cranial training is that working with jaw-related symptoms isn't necessarily aboutโฆ wellโฆ just working on the jaw.
The techniques I learnt give me lots of different ways of approaching the areas involved โ from the jaw and muscles around it, to the neck, head and skull, and even intra-orally.
And that matters because people can experience a whole range of symptoms around this area โ jaw tension, headaches, facial tension, neck tension, pressure around the head, clicking or other sensations โ and the area that feels uncomfortable isn't necessarily the only area worth looking at.
It's another example of something I already believe strongly in my massage practice:
The painful bit isn't always the problem. ๐
I'm still learning and developing these techniques, but I'm really excited about how they can add another layer to the way I work with people.
And apparently, there's a LOT more movement going on inside that supposedly โfixedโ skull than I realised, and I'm a Biologist! ๐คฏ๐
๐
I spent my weekend learning something newโฆ ๐
Iโve just completed the Level 1 TMJ & Cranial training , and Iโm already fascinated by how much there is to explore around the jaw, face, head and neck.
Naturally, I also volunteered myself as a guinea pigโฆ ๐
There was learning.
There was relaxing.
There was quite a lot of laughing.
And alsoโฆ a tiny bit of dribbling. ๐คฃ
Iโm going to spend a little time putting everything Iโve learned together before I introduce this as a standalone treatment, but Iโm really excited about where it could fit into my work, and starting to incorporate some of the techniques into my current treatments.
More to come ๐๐
As massage therapists, we get to know the people behind the muscles weโre working on โ the things going on in their lives, what theyโre hoping to feel better from, and the little things theyโve mentioned along the way.
So yes, sometimes we find ourselves wondering how theyโre getting on between appointments too. ๐
Because massage isnโt just about what happens on the table. ๐
And occasionallyโฆ weโre also wondering how on earth they keep their legs that smooth! ๐
