Last summer Bespoke Atelier led a series of hands-on workshops to inform their public art commission for Midlothian Life Health and Social Care Partnership (Midlothian Council). 
 
Staff, residents and younger members of the local community took part in printmaking sessions at Highbank Intermediate Care Home, taking inspiration from design drawings and floral sketches, as well as the shapes and colours found in the surrounding hillside landscape.
 
Participants worked together on their designs, reflecting on shared connections and hopes for the new purpose-built facility at Polton Street in Bonnyrigg designed by Collective Architecture, which will offer a warm and welcoming environment designed for comfort, care and community.

In Scotland, as across the globe, scarves can be an instant signifier of your sporting allegiance. Souvenirs of great sporting occasions, they are held in times of triumph and moments of hope and left in tribute after tragedy – carriers of memory, a supporter’s trophy.

Players, Mohammad Najib Naheb and Zahir Alizaie, Michelle Magee and Alison O’Neil, and Alloysious Massaquoi wear their scarves, ‘Home’ or ‘Away’ after competing in Forest Pitch (2012). A London 2012 commission by artist Craig Coulthard Forest Pitch saw the creation of a full-size football pitch in the middle of a Spruce plantation in the Scottish Borders. The site was used for one day, hosting two matches, before being left to grow back and be reclaimed by nature. The teams consisted of amateur players from all over Scotland, some who had never played football before. The majority of the players were recent British citizens or those with Leave to Remain.

For Scotland Can Make It! (2012–2014), weave designer Angharad McLaren and graphic designer Emlyn Firth collaborated with Scottish textile manufacturer Johnstons of Elgin to create the set of two merino wool scarves inspired by the home and away support of sporting events. The scarves have been designed as a blank canvas – you choose if you’re ‘Home’ or ‘Away’, what that symbolises, who you’ll support, and what memories you take away with you.

With the Commonwealth Games returning to Glasgow in a couple of weeks, we’re looking back at a project of ours from the last time the city hosted the Games in the Summer of 2014.

Scotland Can Make It! explored the possibilities of making, commissioning six designers and makers from across the country. A collection of six souvenirs were designed and manufactured entirely in Scotland, created by Atelier E.B, Claire Duffy, FOUND, Emlyn Firth with Angharad McLaren, Neil McGuire with Marianne Anderson and Katy West, in close collaboration with producers, fabricators and developers across Scotland. The project encompassed an exhibition, film series, events programme and shop in partnership with Glasgow Museums and South Block.

Barrie Girls, a commission and exhibition Panel presented in 2013, took its inspiration from a set of historical ‘Look Book’ photographs loaned from the archive of Barrie Knitwear.

Garment by garment, two unknown women model the latest season of Barrie’s knitwear collection against a series of undefined backdrops within the factory and its grounds. By re-examining and expanding potential narratives for the photographs, graphic designers Sophie Dyer and Maeve Redmond and artist Fiona Jardine combined the collection with new graphic poster and written works offering a new context for the Barrie Girls.

We have been working behind the scenes with to develop new artworks for for Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnership’s new care facility at Polton Street in Bonnyrigg, designed by
 
Rooted in Bonnyrigg’s textile heritage, Bespoke Atelier’s research has taken inspiration from historic carpet patterns and design drawings found in the archive of Henry Widnell & Sons, a local carpet factory that operated in the town until 1982.
 
Within the Stoddard Templeton Archive at the University of Glasgow Archives and Special Collections (), Bespoke Atelier discovered the sketchbooks of local artist Pierre Langlade (1812–1909), who moved to Scotland from France to work as a designer in the factory.
 
His meticulous studies of flora were translated into industrially-woven carpet designs for a variety of public and private clients all over the world.
 
These archival references have inspired a series of new textile and sculptural works currently in production for the interior and exterior spaces for the new Polton Street development, highlighting Bonnyrigg’s rich industrial and craft heritage.

Revisiting the exhibition ‘A Weakness for Raisins’  in 2018 with ARE projects. Panel commissioned new work by France-Lise McGurn and Sally Hackett in response to a series of pen drawings by Ester Krumbachová and costume from the Barrandov Film Studios Costume and Props Collection, that were also on display as part of the exhibition.

In a couple of week’s time France-Lise McGurn is co-curating an exhibition in Glasgow: Bonny Don’t Live at Home presents ‘I only have apple juice . . .’, a group exhibition curated by John Douglas Millar and France-Lise McGurn.

Panel is working with and design studio on a new public art commission for Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnership, launching later this year.
 
Bespoke Atelier’s new commission will create a series of artworks for a new dementia care facility in Bonnyrigg, inspired by the textile heritage of the local area and its surrounding landscape.
 
Led by Marion Parola-Campbell and Yvonne Elliott-Kellighan, Bespoke Atelier blends the worlds of art and architecture, inventing unique patterns to enhance interiors, products and buildings.
 
Their research has focused on the design archive held at the University of Glasgow Archives & Special Collections () of Henry Widnell & Sons, one of Scotland’s leading carpet manufacturers and a key employer in the area until 1982.
 
It has also taken inspiration from workshops and discussions with residents, staff and members of the local community. 
 
Exterior and interior artworks will create a welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and staff, providing moments of connection across the shared spaces.
