Should beauty therapists still wear uniforms?

After asking our community about uniforms, grooming and professional appearance, one thing became very clear: everyone has an opinion.

From trust and hygiene to individuality, comfort and confidence, the conversation around what beauty professionals wear is far from simple.

Vitality Editor Becci Vallis explores the debate in our latest blog, looking at what our community had to say and how presentation continues to shape the client experience.

T.I.M.E is not just a checklist for consumers, it is a tool beauty professionals can use to help educate, reassure and empower their clients.

By sharing information around Training, Insurance, Monitoring and Evidence, therapists can help clients understand what safe, professional practice looks like and feel more confident asking the right questions before booking a treatment.

Our T.I.M.E resources and assets are available to everyone, free to download from our website to share with clients and use across social channels.

The care you give your clients starts long before the treatment begins.

It’s in your training, your preparation, your consultations, your aftercare and the professional standards you uphold every day.

A little reminder that the work you do behind the scenes matters just as much as the care your clients see in the treatment room 💜

Not every collaboration needs to drive immediate profit, some are about visibility.

The salons, spas and beauty businesses staying relevant are those thinking beyond the treatment room, and becoming part of their clients’ wider lives.

The smallest moments in a treatment can make the biggest difference 💜

BABTAC Member shares her “25-second facial upgrade” - the intentional first contact she uses before the facial begins.

Before reaching for the first product, she uses her hands to connect with the client across the décolletage, shoulders, neck, scalp and face. This helps the client settle into the treatment, while also giving the therapist time to activate their hands and become aware of the areas they will be working on.

It also allows her to check the client’s positioning early: whether the neck is supported, the chin is accessible, the pillow is placed correctly, and whether any adjustments are needed before the treatment gets underway.

A reminder that elevated client care is not always about adding more products, tools or steps. Sometimes, it is about using the moments you already have with more intention, awareness and professional skill.

When will the beauty industry be taken seriously?

Following the recent business rates announcement, the beauty and personal care sector has once again been left out of further support, despite employing nearly 600,000 people, contributing £28 billion to the economy and generating £8 billion in tax.

As discussed on Sky News, Carolyn Harris MP MP, Chair of the APPG for Beauty, Hair & Wellbeing, has written to the Chancellor to challenge the decision and call for greater recognition of the sector.

At BABTAC, we will continue to campaign for beauty professionals, salon owners and personal care businesses to receive the support and respect they deserve.

What do you think needs to happen for beauty and personal care businesses to be properly recognised? 💬

1 in 3 therapists have considered leaving the beauty industry.

BABTAC Beauty Collective Expert in Mental Health & Wellbeing, Hayley Snishko | Massage and Mental Health Advocacy, recently conducted a survey exploring therapist wellbeing, burnout and the emotional demands of working in beauty.

The findings highlight an important conversation for our industry: how can we better support the professionals who spend so much of their time supporting others?

As a holistic beauty therapist and founder of Massage4MentalHealth Mind Body Touch Training Ltd, Hayley is passionate about championing practitioner wellbeing and opening up conversations around mental health, sustainable practice and the support therapists need to continue doing the work they love.

The recent conversation around TPO and gel nail safety has raised an important question: how do consumers know they are in safe hands? 🤔

At BABTAC, we believe it is not about the size of the salon, it is about standards.

Our T.I.M.E initiative encourages consumers to ask the right questions before booking any treatment:

📣 Training. Insurance. Monitoring. Evidence.

Whether a salon is large, small, independent or local, safe and ethical practice comes down to transparency, professionalism and a commitment to client care.

What do you think consumers should be asking before booking a nail treatment? 💬

Thinking about microneedling? Ask the right questions first.

Using the Sharp Standards Guide from Dermalogica UK and BABTAC, along with BABTAC’s T.I.M.E checklist, we’re highlighting what to look for before booking - from training and insurance to consultation, aftercare and evidence.

Microneedling is the controlled puncturing of the skin with fine needles so safe, professional practice matters.
