The SPMU industry has a training problem. And I think it’s time we talked about it.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve started selling the dream more than the reality.

The financial freedom. The flexible working hours. The six-figure businesses. The promise of a completely different life after a few days of training.

But what about the part nobody wants to talk about?

The months of practice. The self-doubt. The treatments that don’t go to plan. The difficulty of building a client base. The sheer amount of patience, discipline and resilience it takes to become a genuinely skilled artist.

SPMU is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It’s a highly skilled profession.

And I think we have a responsibility as educators to be transparent about that.

When somebody invests thousands of pounds into their education, they’re trusting us with far more than their money. They’re trusting us with the foundations of their future career.

That responsibility shouldn’t end when they walk out of the training room with a certificate.

I’m not here to sell you an overnight success story. I’m here to teach you a skill, challenge you, support you and be realistic about what it takes to succeed.

Because I’d rather have a student who understands the commitment than one who’s been sold an unrealistic dream.

The goal shouldn’t be to qualify as quickly as possible. It should be to become as good as possible.

And I think that’s a conversation this industry needs to have.

One of my most commonly asked questions is, what needles do I use?

Every needle I pick with a purpose.

There are so many variables that can change why I would use something different.

The first thing is the way the needle is house. Do I want precision or do I want flexibility?

For outlines and hairstrokes I will always want precision. Whereas shading for brows and lips I want a bit more flexibility.

The needle diameter, taper and configuration will be decided from what age my client is, skin type and the result they want to achieve.

This information may seem super basic to some, however I know many people reach out feeling overwhelmed about what brand they should use.
