If you’ve seen the recent headlines about TPO being banned in nail products, you’re probably wondering what this means for your appointments.

The short answer? There is absolutely no need to panic.

Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of scare-mongering and misinformation circulating online, with many posts lacking the context behind the changes.

TPO has been used for years as a photoinitiator in professional gel products. It helps gel cure correctly under a UV/LED lamp and is also valued for its excellent anti-yellowing properties, helping products stay crystal clear over time. It’s even used as a photoinitiator in some dental resin materials, showing that safety depends on how a substance is used and the level of exposure, not simply whether it exists.

The recent UK regulation means manufacturers are reformulating products to meet the latest legislation—not that professionally applied gel nails have suddenly become unsafe.

As a nail technician, it’s my responsibility to stay educated, keep up to date with industry regulations, and ensure every product I use complies with current UK standards. I take that responsibility seriously, and I would never knowingly use or recommend anything that I believed could compromise your health or safety.
