If you’ve ever come home from holiday with dry, dull, or even green-looking blonde hair, chlorine and seawater are usually the culprits.

🏊‍♀️ Chlorine
Chlorine strips the hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and porous. Once the hair becomes porous, it can absorb metals such as copper that are present in some swimming pools. It’s these metals not the chlorine itself that can cause blonde, highlighted, or lightened hair to take on a green tint.

🌊 Seawater
Salt water can also dry the hair out, making it rough, dehydrated, and more prone to tangling, fading, and damage from the sun.

🚿 What should you do?
✔️ Rinse your hair with fresh water before getting into the pool or sea. Wet hair absorbs less chlorinated or salty water.
✔️ Rinse thoroughly as soon as you get out.
✔️ Wash your hair with a good shampoo at the end of the day to remove chlorine, salt, suncream, and other build-up.
✔️ Follow with a nourishing conditioner or hair mask to restore moisture.

☀️ Don’t forget your suncream!
Some suncreams, especially spray formulas, can stain or contribute to discolouration on light blonde, grey, or chemically lightened hair when combined with pool water. Choose a quality suncream, avoid spraying directly onto your hair, and if you’re using a spray, cover your hair or apply it carefully before tying your hair back.

• Wear a hat or UV-protective hair spray.
• Tie long hair up while swimming and sunbathing.
• Deep condition once or twice a week while you’re away.
