NDLEA SEIZES N12.4BN CANNABIS AT LAGOS PORT, BUSTS DRUG SYNDICATE TARGETING PASSENGERS

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has seized cannabis worth N12.4 billion at the Lagos Port and busted a drug syndicate targeting passengers.

The agency said operatives intercepted large consignments of cannabis concealed in cargo during a joint operation at the port. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is N12.4 billion.

NDLEA added that the operation also led to the disruption of a syndicate that specialized in recruiting and using unsuspecting passengers to traffic illicit drugs locally and internationally.

Several suspects linked to the syndicate have been arrested and are undergoing investigation, the agency said.

The NDLEA Chairman said the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and prevent the movement of narcotics through Nigeria’s ports and airports.

The suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.

TEACHER ALLEGEDLY BEATEN TO DEATH BY FAMILY OF PUPIL SHE PUNISHED IN KOGI SCHOOL
Police: ‘We Are Investigating a Case of Homicide’

A 22-year-old teacher, Mariam Usman, has died after she was allegedly beaten repeatedly by the family of a pupil she punished at Brains Mind School, Ugbamaka Igah, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident began on June 17, 2026, when Mariam punished a pupil for misbehaving in class by flogging him. After school, the pupil reported the punishment to his parents.

According to Mariam’s elder brother, the pupil’s father, Ishaq Abdullahi of the Chado family at Ugbamaka, became enraged. That same evening, Ishaq went to Mariam’s residence and assaulted her.

The attack escalated the next day. While Mariam was on her way to the mosque for prayers on June 18, 2026, Ishaq’s wife and others allegedly blocked her path, beat her, and stripped her naked in public.

Later on June 18, three more individuals joined the assault: a man identified as Akalama and two sisters from Ogbagebe Okpo. Witnesses said they pushed her to the ground, kicked her until she bled, and she fainted. She was left on the ground until residents rushed her to a clinic in Ugbamaka the same day.

After initial treatment, the family transferred Mariam to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for better care. Her condition worsened despite treatment. She died on June 25, 2026, at 5:00 AM from injuries sustained during the repeated attacks.

Her family is now demanding justice, saying she was a dedicated young teacher “full of life, dedicated to her work, and trying to make a difference in the lives of her students.”

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed it is investigating the case as culpable homicide.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said: “Preliminary investigation revealed that on 18th June, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where they assaulted a staff member, Maryam Usman, aged 22, for disciplining a pupil.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on 25th June, 2026.

The suspects fled before the arrival of the police, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them. Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation.”

The suspects are currently at large. Police said the case will be moved to SCID once arrests are made.

The incident has sparked outrage in Olamaboro LGA, with calls for stricter protection for teachers and enforcement against mob justice and corporal punishment disputes.

Brains Mind School has not issued an official statement as of press time.
