Inside there is a gallery where a whisper laid against the stone travels the full circle and arrives, quite clearly, at the other side. You cannot see it go. You have to trust the wall.

Here is the trick, and it is an honest one: people do not do what they are told, they do what they see done. Psychologists call it behavioural contagion — a small kindness performed in public gets copied by strangers who were never spoken to, then copied again by strangers those strangers meet. Three removes, they reckon, before it fades. You will never meet any of them.

So give up the sermon. Pay for the coffee behind you. Hold the door without the face that asks to be thanked. Do the good thing where somebody can see it, and let the wall carry it.

London is beautiful because thousands of people, every morning, quietly decide not to be unkind in it.

— A.

There is a lane in London where the doors are older than most countries. Chancery Lane. Black paint, brass plates, hinges that have outlasted every hand that ever polished them.

I walked it this morning and thought: a door is only wood until someone has the nerve to knock.

They tell you to reach for the sky. Nobody warns you the sky reaches back. Be careful what you wish for — dreams have a stubborn habit of arriving.

So, my gesture to the world, offered freely:

May a door open for you this week that you did not know was there. May you have the nerve to knock. And when you walk through — because you will — hold it open a moment longer for whoever is coming up behind you.

That is the whole trick. That is the entire secret.

Be good to people. It costs nothing and it changes everything.

Another scorching London day. Here’s how I’m keeping steady on my rounds through Kensington and the Royal Crescent —
• Walk at dawn, before the pavement remembers yesterday’s fire
• Stay in the shade; the old streets offer it generously
• Water, always — a bottle is a small act of self-respect
• Slow down. The city isn’t going anywhere
Stay cool, stay kind, and be good to people. 🤍

The light goes long and amber over the water, the bascules rise, and a single boat answers the invitation. There is no hurry in any of it. Some evenings the Thames feels less like a river than a sentence the city has been writing for a thousand years — and you are permitted, briefly, to read over its shoulder. WritersOfInstagram

City of London & Brixton in the sunshine today. A chair, a comb, and a few good souls who hadn’t sat for a proper haircut in too long. There’s no fee for kindness — there never was. Be good to people. 🌞

“Moscow Life: Weaving Dreams Into Reality” will be live today on Amazon UK, Amazon US, and beyond.

This book was not written from ambition. It was written from memory — from the streets of Moscow, from the kitchen table of a woman who taught Russian literature for 65 years in Gagauzia, and who believed, without a shadow of doubt, that there is no bad nationality in this world.

My grandmother, Olga N.M. 1920–2006), used to say it quietly, the way people say things they know to be absolutely true:

“There is no bad nationality. The importance is to live peacefully. Be good to people.”

She said this having lived through a century that tried very hard to prove her wrong.

She remained undefeated.

This book is for her and other important ladies from artistic and hairdressing world. And for anyone who has ever stood between two worlds and tried to make sense of the distance.
