Being a Carer can be hard going with all the demands on your time every single day. Each day I try and spend time with my residents to help me remember why I do such a demanding job.

Earlier today I was reading a post on TikTok about a 17 year old who had just started her first job as a Care Assistant in a nursing home. She’d posted about how hard she was finding it but one interaction she’d had earlier today had made her laugh and turned her day around.

It got me thinking about the hundreds of days I’ve had like that in my career but one particular day will always stick in my mind. I was 18, new in the job, knew I wanted to dedicate my life to our older generation.

I walked into one of the male residents rooms and his room had literally 100’s of photos of beautiful women stuck everywhere. I asked him who they where. He told me that he had travelled extensively and met lots of women. I asked him why he had never married and his response was “Why make one woman miserable when I can make hundreds happy”. My 18 year old self loved that answer 😂😂.

Working in care can be hard going but spending time “on the floor” with our residents definitely helps you remember why you’re doing the job.
