A painful calf is not always a muscle knot.

Calf discomfort can certainly come from exercise, prolonged standing, walking, cramping or muscular overload.

But one-sided calf pain deserves particular attention when it appears together with:

• new swelling in one leg
• unusual warmth around the painful area
• red or darker skin
• throbbing or cramping pain
• veins that feel swollen, hard or tender
• symptoms that appeared without an obvious muscular explanation

These symptoms do not automatically mean that someone has a blood clot.

However, they may resemble symptoms associated with deep vein thrombosis, so attempting to “break up the knot” with deep pressure would not be an appropriate first step.

I am a massage therapist, not a doctor, and I do not diagnose blood clots.

My responsibility is to recognise when something does not behave like ordinary muscular tension and advise the client to obtain urgent medical guidance before treatment.

If calf symptoms are accompanied by sudden breathlessness, chest or upper-back pain, coughing up blood, a very fast heartbeat or fainting, call 999.

Massage can be rescheduled.

Your safety cannot.

Treatment room available to rent on a regular basis in Central London.

The room may be suitable for an osteopath, chiropractor, permanent makeup artist, beauty therapist, or another qualified and insured self-employed practitioner.

Regular availability can include:

• Saturdays
• Sundays
• One fixed weekday, to be agreed

Additional weekdays may also become available, but these would vary from month to month because I need to spend time caring for my mum.

There may also occasionally be an opportunity to rent the room for a longer block, such as five consecutive days or a full week. I should normally be able to confirm these periods approximately one month in advance, potentially around every five weeks.

This arrangement may suit someone looking for regular weekend availability together with occasional additional days or longer blocks.

One of the first questions I ask isn’t just “Where does it hurt?”

It’s:

“When does it hurt?”

Many people don’t realise that when pain appears can be just as important as where they feel it.

For example, does it start:

• after sitting for a long time?

• when you first stand up?

• only after exercise?

• during certain movements?

• or does it ease once you start moving?

These answers help me understand how your symptoms behave.

They don’t give me a diagnosis.

But they help me decide how to adapt your massage safely and whether treatment is appropriate.

Two people may both have lower back pain…

yet their symptoms can behave very differently.

That’s why I never treat every client the same way.

I don’t diagnose medical conditions.

My role is to listen carefully, ask the right questions and tailor every treatment to the person in front of me.

Because good massage isn’t just about knowing where it hurts.

It’s about understanding how your body behaves.

Every body tells a different story.

Most neck, shoulder and back tension is muscular.

It often builds slowly from desk work, stress, driving, poor sleep, heavy bags, training, or simply holding your body in the same position for too long.

That type of tension can often respond very well to personalised massage.

But not every symptom should be treated as “just tight muscles”.

Before booking a massage, there are two signs I always take seriously:

1. New numbness or weakness in your arm or leg

Especially if it comes on suddenly, affects one side, or is linked with face drooping, speech changes, balance problems or vision changes.

That is not something to “massage out”.

You need medical advice first — and if stroke symptoms are possible, call 999.

2. A sudden severe headache or unusual dizziness

If a headache feels sudden, intense, different from your normal pattern, or comes with dizziness, confusion, vomiting, vision changes, fainting, fever or neck stiffness, it should be checked medically first.

Massage is wonderful for muscular tension patterns.

But my job is also to know when massage is not the first step.

Your body gives signals.

Some are tension.

Some are warning signs.

And the safest treatment starts with knowing the difference.

A professional massage therapist should be prepared to say no—even when the client feels ready for treatment.

Feeling generally well does not always mean that every massage technique is appropriate that day.

I may need to postpone, shorten or adapt treatment when you tell me about:

• a fever, infection or feeling suddenly unwell
• a recent operation, injury or medical procedure
• new unexplained swelling, heat or redness
• an open wound or active skin infection
• sudden numbness or weakness
• unusually frequent or unexplained bruising
• medication that may increase bleeding or bruising
• a new health condition that has not yet been assessed

This does not mean that massage will always be completely contraindicated.

Sometimes only one area needs to be avoided.

Sometimes the pressure or technique needs to change.

Sometimes medical clearance is appropriate.

And sometimes the safest decision is to reschedule.

I do not diagnose medical conditions, stop medication or replace medical advice.

My responsibility is to ask the right questions and avoid treating blindly.

A therapist who postpones your treatment is not necessarily being difficult.

She may be protecting you.

Because good massage is not only about knowing what to do with your hands.

It is also about knowing when not to begin.

Many people think the massage begins when I place my hands on their muscles.

For me, it starts much earlier.

Before I begin treatment, I’m already watching how your body moves.

I’m not looking for a diagnosis.

I’m looking for clues that help me give you a safer, more personalised massage.

For example, I notice:

• Do you walk comfortably or protect one side?

• Do you sit down easily or move with care?

• Do you avoid turning your head?

• Do you use your hands to stand up?

Sometimes clients tell me they only have “a little tightness.”

But the way they move tells a different story.

Other times, someone describes severe pain but moves surprisingly well.

Neither tells me the diagnosis.

But together with your answers, they help me decide how to adapt your treatment safely.

Every body moves differently.

Every treatment should be different too.

As a massage therapist, I don’t diagnose medical conditions.

My job is to listen, observe and adapt your massage to the person in front of me.

The best massage doesn’t start with pressure.

It starts with understanding.

One of the biggest mistakes people make happens after the massage—not during it.

Many clients leave feeling lighter, looser and more comfortable.

Then they:

• carry heavy shopping bags

• rush back to the gym

• spend the next six hours at a computer

• sit in the car for a long journey

• or go straight back to the same habits that may have contributed to their tension in the first place.

Massage isn’t a magic reset button.

It gives your body an opportunity to move more freely.

What you do afterwards can make a real difference.

That doesn’t mean you need to lie in bed for the rest of the day.

In fact, gentle walking, staying hydrated and paying attention to your posture can often help you get more from your treatment.

As a massage therapist, one of my goals isn’t just to help you feel better when you leave.

It’s to help those results last for as long as possible.

Small choices after your massage can sometimes make a bigger difference than people realise.

The massage may last 60 minutes.

The way you look after your body afterwards lasts much longer.

Many people believe that the more painful a massage feels, the more effective it must be.

That is one of the biggest misunderstandings about deep tissue massage.

Strong pressure can sometimes be useful, but it should never be used simply to prove that a therapist is working deeply enough.

If you are holding your breath, clenching your jaw, lifting your shoulders or trying to move away from the pressure, your body may be telling us that the treatment is too intense.

Pain is not a competition.

And your ability to tolerate pain does not measure the quality of a massage.

A professional treatment should be adapted to:

• your health and medication
• the sensitivity of the area
• how recently the problem started
• your response during the treatment
• what we are actually trying to achieve

Sometimes slower, broader and more controlled pressure is more appropriate than forcing an elbow into the most painful point.

I am a massage therapist, not a physiotherapist or doctor, and I do not diagnose the cause of pain.

My role is to listen, screen for anything that may make massage inappropriate and adapt the treatment to the person in front of me.

Deep tissue massage should be purposeful.

It should never feel like something you simply have to survive.

Many people believe that bruising after a deep tissue massage proves that the treatment was effective.

It does not.

A bruise develops when small blood vessels beneath the skin are damaged and blood leaks into the surrounding tissue.

It is not evidence that a muscle has been “released”, that fascia has been “broken down” or that toxins have left the body.

And it is not a measure of the quality of a massage.

Some people bruise more easily than others. This may be influenced by age, sensitive skin, certain medicines or an underlying health condition.

That is why I always ask about medication, recent injuries, unexplained bruising and changes in health before beginning treatment.

I do not diagnose medical conditions, but I do adapt the treatment when something may affect your safety.

Deep pressure can sometimes be appropriate.

But deeper is not automatically better.

An effective massage should be based on your body, your symptoms and your response to pressure — not on how much discomfort you can tolerate.

You should always feel able to ask your massage therapist to reduce the pressure.

Massage should be purposeful, personalised and safe.

It does not need to leave bruises to be effective.

If you frequently develop unexplained bruises, unusually large bruises or bruising together with other bleeding, seek medical advice rather than assuming it is normal.
