Does your makeup provide enough sun protection on its own? Generally, no.

While some foundations contain SPF, most people do not apply anywhere near the amount needed to achieve the protection stated on the label. However, wearing foundation over your daily SPF can provide an added benefit: pigments in makeup may help protect against visible light, which can be particularly helpful for those managing pigmentation concerns such as melasma.

Your sunscreen remains the essential first step. Foundation is the added layer, not the replacement.

SPF testing tells you the level of UV protection. We wanted to understand what that protection means for the skin itself.

In advanced 3D skin model testing with Professor Mark Birch-Machin at Newcastle University, Age Defence was tested against UV exposure equivalent to 90 minutes of Mediterranean midday sun.

The results showed that Age Defence helped maintain markers of inflammation, cellular senescence and collagen breakdown at baseline levels.

Protection measured beyond SPF.

UV protection shouldn’t be reserved for holidays.

The Marie Keating Foundation’s Mole Maps campaign is an important reminder that UV exposure does not only happen abroad. It happens at home too, on the school run, during a lunchtime walk, in the garden or simply while going about your day.

UV damage is cumulative, meaning the everyday exposure we experience can build over time. That is why consistent protection matters, even when it does not feel particularly sunny.

Sunscreen is only one part of effective sun protection. Seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and a hat, avoiding prolonged exposure when UV levels are at their strongest, and regularly checking your skin all play an important role too.

With Ireland and the UK experiencing repeated periods of warm and sunny weather this summer, the campaign feels particularly timely. It is an important opportunity to turn sunscreen from something we associate with holidays and heatwaves into a consistent, everyday habit.

Supporting and amplifying this campaign is important in encouraging people across Ireland and the UK to make sun protection part of their everyday routine, not something saved for the suitcase.

Congratulations to the Marie Keating Foundation and Boys + Girls Creative Agency on an important, impactful and highly effective campaign.
