5 questions I ask before developing a new beauty product.
Before we talk formulation, packaging or manufacturing, I want to understand the bigger picture.
1. Who is the product for?
Not just demographics - who are we solving a problem for and what do they actually need?
2. What is the opportunity?
What gap exists in the market, and why is now the right time to launch?
3. Why this product?
What makes it distinctive and why will consumers choose it over the alternatives already available?
4. Does it fit the brand?
A great product can still be the wrong product if it doesn’t strengthen the brand or portfolio.
5. Does the commercial model work?
Costings, pricing, margins, MOQs, manufacturing and route-to-market all need to stack up.
Product development should start with strategy, not a manufacturer.
Get the thinking right first, and the development process becomes much more focused.
If you’re developing a product or have an idea you’re considering bringing to market, I’d love to hear what you’re working on

✨ YOU’RE INVITED | AN EXCLUSIVE FRAGRANCE MASTERCLASS WITH AROMARIA
After a little change of plans earlier this year, I’m delighted that we can finally bring this special evening to life in September. 🤍
Join us for an intimate evening with Aromaria, the luxury Mexican home-fragrance brand, hosted at their beautiful London home.
Founded in 2010 by Ana Patricia Nikaido, Aromaria was born from a love of storytelling and fragrance. Ana first discovered her passion for perfumery while writing a novel about a perfumer who loses her sense of smell — a story that ultimately inspired her to create Aromaria.
Today, Aromaria is known for its beautifully crafted fragrances and immersive sensory experiences.
During this exclusive masterclass, we’ll step behind the scenes of fragrance creation and explore the artistry, storytelling and creativity that goes into designing a scent.
An evening of fragrance, inspiration, conversation and sensory discovery awaits.
📅 Wednesday, 30 September 2026
🕖 7.00–9.00pm
📍 Aromaria, Unit 1, Quadrant Arcade, Piccadilly, London W1B 5HB
Spaces are limited and attendance is by invitation only. Please register your interest by 5th September 2026 via the link in my bio.
This special evening is hosted through Beauty to Life, my private community for beauty founders.
I’m really looking forward to finally bringing this one to life and welcoming you to a very special evening with the Aromaria team. ✨

A great beauty product starts long before the product itself.
I’ve been having lots of conversations with beauty founders recently who have a brilliant product idea, but aren’t always sure how to turn that idea into a commercially viable product.
And that’s where product development can become overwhelming.
✨Where do you start?
✨What should the formulation be?
✨Who should manufacture it?
✨What packaging is right?
✨What will it cost?
✨What should the RRP be?
✨Is the product genuinely differentiated?
And, most importantly, is there a commercial opportunity for it?
Product development isn’t simply about creating something that looks and feels great.
It’s about bringing together consumer insight, brand positioning, formulation, packaging, costings, pricing, margins, manufacturing and route-to-market to create a product with strong foundations for success.
This is an area I’ve worked in throughout my career, from retail buying through to developing products and portfolios for independent and international beauty brands.
Through Bespoke Advantage, I work with founders to take products from idea to market, helping them make the right strategic and commercial decisions along the way.

🌍 TAKING YOUR BEAUTY BRAND TO THE MIDDLE EAST?
Bespoke Advantage is bringing together up to eight international beauty and wellness brands for a curated showcase at Beautyworld Middle East, Dubai | 6–8 October 2026.
This is designed to be more than exhibition space.
Each participating brand will have its own dedicated branded showcase within the Bespoke Advantage stand, alongside support with:
→ Pre-show preparation and training
→ Business development
→ Curated networking and meetings
→ Distributor and retailer introductions
→ Strategic partner connections
→ Post-show follow-up
We’re looking for established, commercially ready beauty brands with ambitions to enter or expand within the Middle East.
We’re intentionally limiting the showcase to eight complementary brands to ensure each participating brand receives meaningful visibility, support and access to relevant commercial conversations.
If your brand is looking to enter or grow within the Middle East, or you know a brand that could be a good fit, I’d love to hear from you

What working across different beauty markets taught me.
One of the most valuable things my career in beauty has given me isn't knowledge of how to build and launch beauty brands. Nor knowledge purely on a particular market.
It's the ability to recognise that there is rarely one way to build a successful beauty business.
I've worked across South Africa, the UK, Dubai and other international markets, and I've seen first-hand how differently consumers shop, how retailers operate and how brands need to adapt.
It has made me much more curious.
* Before assuming something will work, I want to understand the market.
* Before recommending a product, I want to understand the consumer.
* Before suggesting expansion, I want to understand the commercial opportunity.
* And before scaling something, I want to know whether the foundations are strong enough.
That's probably one of the biggest influences on how I work today.
Stay curious.
Ask better questions.
Don't assume one market behaves like another.
WHAT CAN BEAUTY BRANDS LEARN FROM BYREDO'S LATEST SELFRIDGES POP-UP?
I love seeing beauty brands create experiences that make you stop, look and engage.
I recently visited the Byredo Future Memories pop-up at Selfridges, created around the launch of its latest fragrance.
What caught my attention wasn't simply the product.
It was the experience around it.
The fragrance becomes a story.
The environment creates curiosity.
The opportunity to interact with the brand makes the launch feel memorable.
And that's an important lesson for beauty brands. Retail is no longer simply about putting a product on a shelf.
The strongest brands are thinking about:
✨ How do we create discovery?
✨ How do we make people want to stop?
✨ How do we give consumers something worth experiencing?
✨ How do we turn a product launch into a moment?
✨ How do we create something people want to photograph, share and remember?
This is particularly powerful in fragrance, where emotion, memory and storytelling are such an important part of the category.
Byredo has always understood the power of creating a world around its products and this activation is another great example of how brands can use physical retail to deepen that connection.
For me, this is where retail becomes brand building. It's not just about selling more products.
It's about creating an experience that makes the consumer want to engage with the brand. If you're building a beauty brand, I'd be asking: what could you create in retail that people would actually remember?

A TRIBUTE TO DOLLY PARTON 🤍
'Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the stories, the laughter and the example. It is hard to imagine a world without seeing you on stage, doing what you did best, performing in those five-inch heels, surrounded by rhinestones, looking glamorous and making us smile.'
Sad to say goodbye, even though we never had the privilege of meeting, to one of the greatest legends of our time, Dolly Parton.
Dolly left an extraordinary mark on the world, not simply because of everything she achieved, but because of who she remained while achieving it. From humble beginnings in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, she became one of the most successful songwriters, performers and businesswomen of her generation.
She wrote thousands of songs.
Sold more than 100 million records.
Won 10 Grammy Awards.
Built businesses, created Dollywood and developed an extraordinary career spanning seven decades.
But for me, her legacy goes far beyond the accolades. She took her work seriously, but never seemed to take herself too seriously. Perhaps most beautifully, she used her success to give back.
Her Imagination Library, inspired by her father who could not read or write, has given millions of books to children around the world. Her philanthropy has supported education, healthcare, disaster relief and medical research. There is something incredibly beautiful about that.
Dolly showed us that you can be wildly ambitious and successful while remaining kind. You can evolve without losing yourself. You can take your work seriously without taking yourself too seriously. And you can come from humble beginnings without ever being ashamed of your roots.
Her legacy will be so much more than the songs she left us. It will be the joy, generosity, courage and possibility she gave to so many people.
And for showing generations that you can dream big, build something extraordinary, remain completely yourself and take everyone with you along the way.
'Rest peacefully, Dolly. ✨'
Getting a retail buyer interested is not the same as being retail ready.
One of the conversations I have regularly with beauty founders is around retail.
They have a great product.
They have beautiful packaging.
They have a strong story.
And they want to know: “How do we get into Sephora, Boots, Selfridges, Space NK? and other retailers.”
But the better question is: “Why would that retailer need our brand?” A buyer is looking at your business commercially.
✨Is there consumer demand?
✨ Is the proposition clear?
✨Is the pricing, right?
✨Are the margins attractive?
✨Does the range make sense?
✨ Can the brand support the launch?
And ultimately: Will it sell?
Retail isn't simply a distribution channel. It's a commercial partnership.
The strongest brands understand what they need to offer the retailer and not just what they want from the retailer.
That's the difference between wanting a listing and being ready for one.

Beauty is becoming harder to differentiate and that's a good thing.
The beauty industry doesn't need more brands. It needs more brands with a reason to exist.
We've never had more choice.
More skincare.
More supplements.
More fragrance.
More colour.
More niche brands.
More launches every week.
And yet I think this creates an interesting opportunity. Because when everything is available, clarity becomes a competitive advantage.
The brands that stand out aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest range or the loudest marketing.
They're the ones where you immediately understand:
✨ Who they are.
✨ Who they're for.
✨ Why they matter.
✨ And why you should choose them.
That's what I look for when I'm working with a brand. Not simply “What can we launch?”
But “Why should this brand exist and why will people care?” That's where strong brands begin.
What makes a beauty brand genuinely stand out to you?
BUILDING BETTER BEAUTY BUSINESSES
A new market isn't an opportunity until you understand how you're going to win there.
I speak to a lot of beauty brands interested in international expansion.
Often the starting point is:
"We'd love to enter Germany."
"We think the Middle East could be a huge opportunity."
"We want to expand into the US."
And my first question is usually: Why?
Not because the market isn't attractive.
But because international expansion requires more than identifying a large opportunity. You need to understand:
✨ The consumer
✨ The competitive landscape
✨ The retail environment
✨ Pricing and margins
✨ Route to market
✨ Distribution
✨ Regulatory requirements
✨ And what will make your brand relevant locally
What works in one market doesn't automatically translate into another. International growth isn't copy and paste. It's strategy plus localisation.
If you're considering entering a new market, the first step isn't finding a distributor. It's understanding whether the opportunity is right for your brand.
