Managing around it isn't the same as being fine.
Dark clothes in case. The extra bag. Knowing which days of the month are a write-off. Sitting out the trampoline, the run, the swim. Working out which positions are comfortable and which are not, and never quite saying why.
It is such a gradual process that most women do not notice how much they have given up until they list it out.

How much is actually too much?
Heavy periods are hard to judge, because the only bleeding you have ever known is your own. These are the signs that usually mean it is worth looking into properly:
Soaking through a pad or tampon every hour or two
Bleeding for longer than seven days
Passing clots the size of a 10p coin or bigger
Flooding through onto clothes or bedding
Feeling drained, breathless or short on energy
Heavy bleeding almost always has a reason behind it. Fibroids, polyps, changes to the lining of the womb, hormonal shifts and coil-related bleeding are all common ones, and they are not managed the same way. That is why a consultation starts with finding out why, before anything is suggested.
Depending on what is found, the options a surgeon may talk through with you include:
Investigation and imaging, to identify what is causing it
Myomectomy, where fibroids are behind the bleeding
Hysterectomy, where symptoms are long standing and other routes have not helped
Wider gynaecological options, discussed against your own plans and priorities
