One phone call at my first ever job has torn my family apart, and now I’m terrified that what I did at 18 could follow me for years.
My sister’s marriage is falling apart. My brother in law is threatening to report me. And somehow, I’m right in the middle of everything.
The worst part? None of this was supposed to involve me.
I’m 18, and I recently got my first ever job as a customer service adviser for a bank.
A few weeks ago, I was taking calls as usual when a customer came through. I gave my normal greeting and started going through the security questions.
Then his name appeared on my screen.
It was my brother in law.
Out of all the agents working that day, his call had somehow landed with me.
He was having an issue with his credit card and some transactions on his account, so I continued with the call and tried to stay professional.
While going through the transactions, I noticed something that made my stomach drop.
There were payments to OnlyF.
Then I noticed other subscriptions connected to dating and romance websites.
I genuinely didn’t know what to do.
I hadn’t searched for his account. I wasn’t snooping. He called the bank himself, I happened to answer, and the transactions appeared while I was dealing with his query.
I finished the call professionally, but after he hung up, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I had seen.
This wasn’t just some random customer.
This was my sister’s husband.
Part of me knew that whatever I saw at work was supposed to stay at work.
But another part of me kept thinking, “If my sister finds out later and discovers that I knew, how will I ever explain why I kept quiet?”
Eventually, I told her.
I didn’t send screenshots. I didn’t give her his statements. I simply told my sister what I had seen.
And that one conversation changed everything.
Apparently, there were already problems in their marriage that I knew nothing about. She confronted him, more things came out, and now she has filed for divorce.
My brother in law is furious with me.
He says I had absolutely no right to disclose anything I saw while working at the bank, and he is threatening to make a formal complaint to my employer for breaching his privacy.
Now I’m scared, but not just because I might lose this job.
This is my first job. I’m only 18. If I lose it, I can look for another one.
What scares me is what happens afterwards.
If I’m dismissed for breaching customer confidentiality, will future employers find out?
What happens when another company asks this bank for a reference?
Could one decision I made at 18 follow me throughout my career?
I thought I was protecting my sister.
Instead, her marriage is falling apart, my brother in law blames me, and my first job could be on the line.
Did I cross a line by telling my sister, or would you have done the same thing?
