Why I don’t recommend squeezing milia and why I use electrolysis.

Milia are small, firm, keratin-filled cysts that commonly appear as tiny white or skin-coloured bumps, particularly around the delicate eye area.
Although they can be tempting to squeeze, milia are not spots and should not be treated in the same way. Attempting to remove them by squeezing can cause unnecessary trauma to the skin, resulting in inflammation, bruising, infection or, in some cases, scarring.

This is why I prefer to use electrolysis for suitable cases of milia removal. Electrolysis allows me to work with precision, creating a very small opening in the surface of the skin so that the contents can be released without applying unnecessary pressure to the surrounding tissue.

My priority is always to achieve effective results while respecting the integrity of the skin. Every client is assessed individually, as not every bump is a milia and not every case is suitable for treatment.

Professional assessment and appropriate technique are key when working on delicate areas of the skin.

Melasma is a complex skin concern that involves more than just excess pigment. Research suggests that factors such as inflammation, blood vessel changes, hormones, UV exposure, and skin barrier dysfunction can all play a role.

This is one of the reasons I don't routinely use laser treatments for melasma. While lasers can be effective for some pigmentation concerns, melasma can become more reactive after laser treatment which can lead to worsening of the pigmentation.

Instead, I prefer a more targeted approach using treatments that help regulate pigment production, reduce inflammation, protect the skin barrier, and support long-term skin health.

Many people are surprised to learn that an intradermal nevus (a common raised mole) on the scalp or head can often be treated successfully with short wave diathermy.

A common misconception is that moles in the hair-bearing areas of the head cannot be treated with this technique. In reality, when a lesion has been properly assessed and is suitable for treatment, short wave diathermy can be an effective option.

The treatment works by using very small and controlled amounts of electrical energy to precisely remove the lesion while minimising damage to the surrounding tissue.

As with any skin lesion, it is essential that the mole is appropriately assessed before treatment to ensure it is benign and suitable for removal. Patient safety and correct diagnosis always come first.

If you have a raised mole on your scalp or head that you've been told may be difficult to treat, it may be worth seeking advice from a qualified practitioner experienced in short wave diathermy.

One of the most common things I hear at the moment is:

💬 "I want polynucleotides."

And my first question is always... why?

Usually the answer is because they've seen them all over social media.

Don't get me wrong, there's a place for lots of different treatments. But just because something is trending doesn't automatically make it the best option for your skin.

I often explain it like this:

If your garden isn't thriving, you can keep watering it, but without the right nutrients in the soil, the plants will never reach their full potential.

Your skin works in a very similar way.

The cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin are called fibroblasts. While polynucleotides work by encouraging tissue repair and regeneration, I often prefer to use different treatment which combines hyaluronic acid with a patented blend of amino acids.

Why? Because amino acids are the building blocks that fibroblasts need to function properly. You're essentially providing these cells with the nutrients they need to do their job, supporting collagen production, elasticity, skin quality and overall skin health.

Think of it this way: polynucleotides can be compared to giving the skin instructions to repair itself, whereas amino acids provide some of the raw materials the skin cells need to carry out that work.

Both approaches have their place, but for many of my clients supporting fibroblasts with a targeted combination of amino acids and hyaluronic acid is why this treatment remains one of my go-to options, despite whatever happens to be trending online.

That's why my recommendations are based on skin science and individual client needs, not trends.

One of the most important parts of my job isn't performing treatments, it's knowing when a different option may be better for the client.

A while ago, a lovely lady came to see me looking for facial rejuvenation. I could have treated her and it would have given her some improvement. However, after assessing her concerns and discussing her goals, I felt that another treatment which I don’t offer would likely provide a better outcome for what she was hoping to achieve. So I referred her to another local clinic.

I saw her again today, and she looks absolutely amazing. The results are beautiful, natural, and exactly what she was hoping to achieve.

This experience reminded me that aesthetics shouldn't be about jealousy, competition, or trying to keep every client for yourself. It should be about putting the client first and recognising when another practitioner or clinic may be the better option for a particular treatment.

I genuinely believe there is room for all of us in this industry. When we collaborate, support one another, and refer clients appropriately, everyone benefits, especially the client.

Would it have been easier to carry out a treatment myself? Perhaps. But my priority has always been helping clients achieve the best possible outcome, even if that means recommending another clinic.

For me, it's always collaboration over competition.
