When you’re experiencing builder gel lifting or poor gel retention, the first instinct can be to add another prep product or become more aggressive with nail prep. But good retention is rarely down to one step.

Instead, look for the pattern. Is it lifting around the cuticle? At the sidewalls or free edge? Is it happening on every nail or only certain nails? Is the product actually lifting, or is it cracking due to structure or the wrong level of flexibility for that client?

The condition of the natural nail matters too. Repeated picking, lifting and over-filing can damage the surface you’re trying to adhere to, meaning more prep can sometimes make a retention problem worse rather than better.

Whether you work with HEMA-free gel, hypoallergenic gel, builder gel, BIAB-style systems or hard gel, the principle is the same: great retention comes from matching the right system and technique to the individual client.

And while we’ve used the HONA system throughout this guide, this education isn’t just relevant to HONA.

These are troubleshooting principles nail techs can consider when working with any professional gel brand, alongside that manufacturer’s specific application and curing instructions.

HONA for Lovebirds at London Fashion Week, SS27 - India, IYKYK.

London Fashion Week is a global hub for creativity, innovation and trend-setting style, and this season HONA stepped backstage as the Official Nail Partner for Lovebirds Studio’s SS27 London Fashion Week presentation.

Designers Gursi Singh and Amrita Khanna brought Indian craft and nostalgia to the runway, reworking hand-painted signs, packaging, chintz and brocades into playful, deconstructed silhouettes.

The beauty direction echoed that same balance of nostalgia and modernity. Featuring Paradise and Miami Gel Polish, the HONA hypoallergenic gel system added fresh, glossy colour to the runway, complementing the collection without competing with it.

From backstage prep to the final runway walk, it was a huge moment for HONA bringing our professional nail system into the wider fashion conversation and showcasing the role nails can play in completing a runway look🖤
