Philippa Whitham Complementary Therapist
I am fully qualified in Reflexology, Body massage, pregnancy, Aromatherapy & Indian head massage. This is where Complementary therapy could help you. Philippa.
Specialist in integrative holistic therapy for cancer and palliative care patients. For over eighteen years I have had the privilege of caring for people in a clinical setting. I decided to train in massage therapy and reflexology as I have seen how complementary therapy can have a positive influence on individuals wellbeing. Sometimes we may feel that we need something different to help us feel better and more energised or to just help us to relax and feel pampered. I am fully qualified and insured in Swedish massage, aromatherapy and reflexology as well as other therapies. I have also completed speaclist training so I can provide holistic treatments to Cancer patients. I am also registered with the Federation of Holistic Therapist. I must stress though that Complementary therapy does not replace medical treatments or the care of your nurse, GP or any other healthcare professional. On your first appointment I will complete a full consultation on your general health, past medical history and your expectations. In some cases I may require a GP letter to give permission to provide you with treatment. All information will be kept confidential and secure. If you are interested in an appointment please message me. There is a 50% fee of the price of appointments that have had no shows and less than 24hr notice for cancellations.

A Critical Warning on Unregulated Massage Trends, Social Media Gimmicks, and Client Safety ⚠️🌿
I have worked in healthcare for most of my life—qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 2003 and integrating complementary therapies and massage into my practice in 2015. Over all these years, my absolute priority has always been client safety, thorough medical screening, and proper, evidence-based care.
However, over the past six months to a year, I have seen an unprecedented explosion of advertisements on social media for massage therapy—especially specialized offerings like Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and "detox" bodywork.
While these treatments are currently being marketed as trendy, quick-fix pampering sessions, there is a dangerous reality behind the glossy ads that every client needs to understand: complementary therapies in the UK currently have no statutory regulation.
Virtually anyone can purchase a massage couch, watch a few online tutorials, post an ad on Instagram or Facebook, and start accepting paying clients—without formal clinical qualifications, pathology training, or an understanding of medical safety.
What I Am Seeing in Clinic Right Now
In less than 24 hours, I have personally come across two separate clients who had recently undergone MLD sessions elsewhere and were left feeling very unwell afterward.
When specialized techniques are performed incorrectly or treated like a trendy, aggressive "rub," they don't help the body heal—they can severely overload your systemic circulation and nervous system, leaving you feeling sick, exhausted, and physically drained rather than refreshed.
1. Social Media Gimmicks vs. Mechanical Safety
If you scroll through video platforms today, you will see therapists putting on "performative" shows to gain views—including standing full-body on top of therapy tables with clients lying face down.
From a basic physics and safety standpoint, this is extraordinarily dangerous:
Structural Weight Limits: Standard portable therapy couches have strict working weight limits (combining client weight and downward pressure). Adding a therapist’s full standing weight on top of a client overloads the frame, joints, and tension cables, risking a sudden, catastrophic table collapse.
Uncontrolled Force: Standing on a client removes all fine tactile control and proper leverage, exposing the client's spine, ribs, and soft tissue to severe injury.
2. Specialized Techniques Require Clinical Expertise
Specialized modalities like MLD require an exceptionally light, precise touch targeting superficial pathways. Aggressive, rough, or deep pressure can disrupt delicate initial lymphatics, strain the circulatory system, and cause significant systemic discomfort.
3. All Massage Has Physiological Contraindications
Even classic, standard styles like Swedish or aromatherapy massage are direct physiological interventions. They increase systemic blood flow, alter blood pressure, shift fluid balance, and stimulate the nervous system.
Without a rigorous medical intake, an unqualified practitioner can easily overlook critical contraindications, including:
Vascular risks or unmanaged cardiovascular conditions
Underlying risks associated with aneurysms or blood clotting
Recent surgical sites or acute systemic inflammation
Cumulative overload on an already compromised system
How to Protect Yourself Before Booking
Massage therapy should never be treated like an unregulated free-for-all or a social media stunt. Before getting onto any massage couch, protect your health by asking three essential questions:
1. Did they conduct a thorough, written medical consultation BEFORE you got on the table? A quick 30-second verbal chat is not an adequate clinical assessment.
2. What are their formal qualifications and insurance details? Do not hesitate to ask where they trained and if they hold accredited, recognized credentials.
3. Can they explain how their technique is adapted to your specific medical history?
A genuine, professional therapist will always put client safety, clinical dignity, and proper health screening ahead of a quick booking fee or social media views. Your health and safety are far too valuable to leave in unverified hands!

Some sad news to bring you this afternoon.
Belfast boxer Ray Close has died at the age of 57.
It would be a dream come true to visit a proper French lavender 🪻 farm. To see the whole process from field to bottle. Lavender is such an underappreciated essential oil. It is simply wonderful!

Creating a safe, calming space where you can truly let go. 🌿✨
With a background in adult nursing and NHS experience as a complementary therapist in cancer and palliative care, my clinical roots deeply inform my practice. I combine standard complementary therapies with specialist skills tailored to sensitive physical and emotional needs, including:
Aromatherapy & custom blending to support comfort and well-being.
Specialist reflexology and light touch massage to soothe the nervous system.
The HEARTS Process—a specialist framework integrating hands-on empathy, aroma, relaxation, textures and sound.
My passion has always been walking alongside those navigating cancer, life-limiting illnesses, and trauma. When words aren't enough, these gentle therapies offer a grounded, reassuring space to restore peace and dignity.

So glad that this issue is finally getting addressed. Though disappointed that this article refers to this massage therapist as a massuse.
Sadly I have had inappropriate messages in the past.

Bridging Clinical Care & Holistic Healing: My Journey to Independent Practice 🌿
They say life sometimes pushes you in a direction before you feel completely ready!
After qualifying as a nurse in 2003—and spending 6 deeply meaningful years providing Complementary Therapy within NHS Cancer Services—recent unexpected changes meant stepping fully into self-employment.
While I have always maintained a sessional private practice alongside my clinical work over the years, relying on it completely while still healing and processing recent events has been a whole new journey. I am still adapting to the ongoing challenges day by day, but having this dedicated space allows me to rebuild and stay true to what I love doing most—supporting people.
Having over two decades of clinical experience behind me naturally shapes how I care for my clients. While I am always learning, my background as a nurse gives me a deep respect for medical safety, complex health conditions, and conventional treatment pathways. It allows me to hold a grounded, reassuring space where complementary therapies can work safely alongside your existing healthcare—offering a gentle bridge between clinical knowledge and holistic well-being.
To everyone who has offered support and kindness along the way: thank you. Out of difficult, uncertain times, gentle new growth can still happen.
If you’d like to learn more about my integrative approach or book a session, feel free to send me a message directly. ✨
