This Sunday morning, I want to celebrate someone rather special...
Sometimes, life can feel a bit tough, can't it? There's so much bad news, so many worries, and it's easy to forget just how much goodness there is in the world.
And then someone like Oscar comes along. 🧡💙
Oscar is just seven years old. A little lad from Cotmanhay, who decided he wanted to do something to help others. So he set himself a challenge. Seven walks in seven days, raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
You know, we sometimes hear people saying that community spirit isn't what it used to be. That people don't care like they once did. Well, I'd say they haven't met Oscar. Because this little lad has reminded us of something really important.
You don't have to be big to make a difference. You don't have to be wealthy to give something valuable. And you certainly don't have to be grown up to make the world a better place.
All you need is a kind heart and the determination to do something good. And Oscar has shown us that in bucketloads.
But there's something else about Oscar's story that's really touched me.
The wonderful people of Ilkeston have rallied around him, digging into their own pockets to support his fundraising.
And that means so much. Because we all know times aren't easy for everyone at the moment. Yet people have still found a little something to give, to help a young lad who's trying to help others. A seven-year-old boy showing us what kindness looks like, and a community responding with kindness of its own.
That's the Ilkeston I know and love. 💙🧡
Ilkeston might not be the biggest or wealthiest town in the world. We have our problems, just like everywhere else. But I'll tell you something... When I see youngsters like Oscar, and the kindness and generosity that still exist in our community, I wouldn't want to call anywhere else home.
Oscar, from the bottom of this old gnome's heart, thank you. Thank you for reminding us that there's still so much good in this world. You've made your family proud, you've made your town proud, and you've certainly made me proud. Keep being you, young man. The world needs more people like you.
And to everyone who's supported Oscar, thank you too. You've reminded us what a wonderful community we can be when we come together.

Have a lovely Sunday. And remember, a little kindness can go a very long way. 🧡

Seven-year-old Ilkeston boy just £223 away from £1,000 charity target ahead of final walk - Ilkeston News A seven-year-old boy from Ilkeston is closing in on a £1,000 fundraising target after taking inspiration from the remarkable friendship between rugby league

MEET OSCAR – ILKESTON'S SEVEN-YEAR-OLD FUNDRAISING HERO WHO IS JUST £223 AWAY FROM HIS TARGET! 🧡
At just seven years old, Oscar from Ilkeston is showing us all what it means to have a big heart.
Inspired by the incredible friendship of Sir Kevin Sinfield and the late Rob Burrow, Oscar is taking on his very own challenge to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
He's walking seven days in a row – one for every year of his life – and tomorrow, Saturday 10 October, he'll complete his final walk!
Since Sunday, Oscar, who is autistic, has been out walking around Ilkeston, including Coppice Avenue, the hospital area and Heanor Road, making little videos to share his journey.
But it's not just the walking that makes Oscar's story so special.
He's also decided to donate his own saved-up pocket money and sell toys he no longer plays with to raise even more money for the charity.
And his efforts are paying off!
His family have told Ilkeston News that Oscar has now raised an incredible £777 towards his £1,000 target!
That means he needs just £223 more to reach his goal.
We love celebrating the people who make Ilkeston special, and we reckon this little lad deserves a huge round of applause.
CAN WE HELP OSCAR REACH £1,000 BEFORE HIS FINAL WALK TOMORROW?
If you'd like to support him, you can donate here: https://raise.ing/jgd8qrylm6pnr
And if you can't donate, sharing his story could make all the difference.
Come on, Ilkeston. Let's show Oscar how proud we are of him!
