βοΈ Winter, Flu & Your Chest
Winter bugs and chest infections can be particularly tough if you already live with a chest or lung condition such as COPD, bronchiectasis, asthma or pulmonary fibrosis.
You may find youβre more breathless, have more phlegm or mucus on your chest, feel tired and become less active.
This is where respiratory physiotherapy may help.
π« Chest clearance β techniques to help you clear phlegm and mucus
π¬οΈ Breathing techniques β to help you manage breathlessness
πΆ Getting moving again β gradually rebuilding activity after illness
πͺ Building strength and fitness β helping you get back to your usual routine
Sometimes, after an illness, it can feel like your chest has never quite recovered. Getting the right advice and gradually rebuilding your activity can help.
If you have a chest or lung condition and winter tends to knock you back, respiratory physiotherapy may be able to help.

Sometimes, the simplest exercise works best πΆββοΈ
Iβve been seeing a lady for several months who found the more traditional circuit-style exercises really difficult to manage.
So we changed the approach.
Rather than trying to make her fit the exercise programme, we listened to what worked for her.
I suggested something very simple: get outside and walk.
My exact words were along the lines of: βStick a little clip to your hipβ β basically, use a pedometer/step counter and start keeping track of how much youβre walking.
And she is absolutely crushing it! π
But the best part is that the benefits have gone far beyond the physical.
Her walks have become a chance to get out of the house, see her neighbours and have a chat. What started as a simple walk has turned into 30-minute conversations with neighbours β and sheβs even been over for a cuppa. βοΈ
Itβs made a real difference to her confidence, routine and overall wellbeing.
Itβs a good reminder that rehabilitation doesnβt always have to mean complicated exercises or a circuit of different movements.
Sometimes, the best exercise is the one that fits the person in front of you.
Listen to the patient. Find out what they enjoy. Make it achievable. Then build from there.
πΆββοΈ Sometimes, walking really is the best exercise.
Receiving rehabilitation at home can make a real difference when recovery continues after you leave the hospital
After an illness, hospital stay, surgery or injury, getting home is often just the beginning. People may still need support to rebuild their strength, mobility and confidence.
At BlueRose HomePhysio, we provide home rehabilitation and community physiotherapy, helping people work towards practical goals in their own environment.
This may include:
β’ Improving strength and mobility
β’ Working on walking and transfers
β’ Improving balance and confidence
β’ Building independence with everyday activities
β’ Providing a structured rehabilitation programme to continue between sessions
Being able to practise these things at home, in the environment where they need to function, can be an important part of recovery.
We provide home physiotherapy and rehabilitation across Nottingham and surrounding areas.
If you or someone you know is finding recovery difficult after illness, hospital or injury, home rehabilitation may be able to help.

Investing in the Future of Rehabilitation and Healthcare π
Today we had the pleasure of speaking with an aspiring healthcare professional who is currently training in sports massage and exploring routes into physiotherapy through a degree apprenticeship.
While we weren't able to offer the apprenticeship support they were looking for directly, it was fantastic to discuss the many pathways available within rehabilitation and healthcare.
We explored opportunities within larger physiotherapy organisations that may be able to support apprenticeship routes, as well as related careers such as exercise physiology and occupational health.
One of the things we love most at BlueRose Healthcare Ltd is seeing people who are passionate about helping others improve their health, mobility and quality of life.
The demand for skilled rehabilitation professionals continues to grow, and there are more routes into these rewarding careers than ever before.
To anyone considering a future in physiotherapy, rehabilitation, exercise science or occupational health: keep asking questions, seek out opportunities, and don't be afraid to explore the different paths available. Every healthcare professional starts somewhere.
We wish this future clinician every success on their journey. π
π‘ Did you know we also provide physiotherapy in care homes?
We were recently asked by a patient's daughter whether we could visit her mum in her care home β and yes, we can! π
For some older adults, moving into a care home following a hospital stay is just the beginning of their recovery. They may have become weaker during their illness or hospital stay and need some extra support to build strength, improve mobility and regain confidence.
At BlueRose HomePhysio, we can provide physiotherapy within care home settings, working with the individual on a tailored rehabilitation programme.
This may include:
πͺ Building strength
πΆ Improving walking and mobility
πͺ Practising transfers
βοΈ Working on balance and confidence
π‘ Supporting greater independence
Rehabilitation can take time, and our aim is to help each person work towards what is realistic for them, whether that's becoming stronger and more mobile or simply maintaining the abilities they have.
If you're a family member wondering whether physiotherapy could help someone following a hospital stay, get in touch and we can discuss their needs.

When should rehabilitation start after someone comes home from hospital?
It can be tempting to think someone needs to rest and recover for a while before starting rehabilitation.
But sometimes, waiting too long can mean they become weaker, less mobile and less confident.
After an illness or hospital stay, someone might be struggling with:
πΆ Walking around the home
πͺ Getting in and out of a chair
πͺ Managing the stairs
βοΈ Balance and confidence
πͺ Strength and endurance
π Getting back to everyday activities
Could physiotherapy help?
Often, rehabilitation can begin with very simple, practical things β working on safe transfers, walking around the home, building strength gradually and helping someone regain confidence.
It doesn't have to mean doing lots of difficult exercises.
The aim is to help someone move more safely, do more for themselves and gradually get back to their usual routine.
At BlueRose, our physiotherapy-led community rehabilitation is provided in people's own homes, allowing us to work on the things that are actually important to them.

Sometimes the most honest thing we do is tell someone that physiotherapy isn't what they need.
As physiotherapists, we can use hands-on techniques such as massage and manual therapy when they're clinically appropriate. But that's not the main focus of physiotherapy, and it's not something we offer as a stand-alone treatment.
Our role is to help people maintain or improve their mobility, strength, confidence and independence.
Sometimes people contact us looking for regular massage to ease stiffness and discomfort. While that may help them feel more comfortable in the short term, it won't address the underlying loss of strength or mobility that often comes from reduced movement.
Physiotherapy is an active process. We work alongside people, supporting them at their own pace, encouraging movement, building confidence, and helping them do more for themselves over time.
That's why we occasionally recommend a different service rather than take a booking.
Could we fill our diary more easily by saying yes to everyone? Probably.
But we'd rather be honest about what physiotherapy can realistically achieve and help people find the support that's right for them.
Doing what's best for the patient will always come before taking the booking. π
