“My hair is damaged” is like saying “I don’t feel well.” It describes the state but not the cause. There are actually FOUR types of hair damage — and each one attacks your strand through a completely different mechanism.
Mechanical damage is PHYSICAL — friction, tension, and force stripping your cuticle and snapping your cortex. Thermal damage is STRUCTURAL — heat energy permanently unfolding the organized protein that gives your hair strength and elasticity. Chemical damage is MOLECULAR — oxidizers permanently converting structural bonds into forms that can never function again. Environmental damage is CHRONIC — UV, pollution, and weathering slowly degrading your shaft over months and years of exposure.
Most people experience two to four types simultaneously — and each type makes the others WORSE. Chemical damage removes the cuticle that would have protected against UV. Thermal damage weakens the protein that would have resisted mechanical force. The four types converge until the shaft can’t hold itself together.
Each type has a specific prevention: gentler handling, lower heat, smarter processing, protective products. A deep conditioner treats the surface of all four — but prevents NONE of them.
