First 4 weeks in the bag!

It is now 4 weeks ago I had my ACL surgery but sometimes it feels like 4 months!

Time is moving slowly but that's how it's supposed to be. Exercise, rest, fuel up, exercise again, sleep, and repeat! ๐Ÿ’ช

The first month was mostly about getting the swelling and pain under control while trying my hardest to activate my thigh muscles. The thigh muscles switch off with this type of surgery and the faster they activate the better for overall recovey. The thigh lost 14cm in circumference in the first 2 weeks due to muscle loss!

On the 8th September, I got my staples out (19 in total) and felt immediate relief and the knee felt much less restricted at the front. (I've got cracking photos so comment below if you'd like to see them ๐Ÿ˜‰)

The following day, I stopped taking pain medication regularly and only took a few paracetamols since, when things got tough.

The last 2 weeks were mostly focused on regaining control over my leg, putting weight through the knee in a controlled way and learning to walk again.๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The thigh is regaining muscle and the knee is starting to feel more secure. I can now take a few steps without crutches. 5 days ago I even managed to drive for the first time so I no longer feel trapped in the house.

Overall, very happy with the progress. Looking forward to the next stages and hopefully ditching the crutches soon!

Thank you all for the support you've given and continue to give me as I power through this, it means a lot! ๐Ÿ’š

See you all in the next update! ๐Ÿ‘€

So week 1 post op is done and dusted!

It's been a bit up and down but overall seeing steady progress.

Days 1-3 were much the same with swelling peaking at that stage. However I did manage to stand long enough to cook my own meal on day 3 so that felt like an achievement ๐Ÿ’ช even better that it was steak ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ. Day 3 was also made better by my specialist leg support pillow arriving as it keeps my leg elevated and straight. This is very important at this stage as if I don't get full extension the knee in the first 2 weeks I might never be able to straighten my leg fully.

Day 4 I started to notice some improvements in the swelling and pain levels. I managed to contract some muscles around the knee as they were completely switched off for the first 3 days. This allowed me to do straight leg lifts to work the muscles.

Days 5 & 6 again I felt less swelling and the heavy bruising started to appear. More range of motion in the knee and finally getting out for a short 100m walk.

Day 7 felt like another milestone as I reduced my pain medications and generally starting to be able to move the knee a lot more freely.

I still can't be upright because as soon as I stand up I feel my knee swells and it feels like its ripping it apart so can only handle that for so long.
Overall quite happy with the progress. 1 more week of prioritising rest and leg elevation while slowly increasing the amount of times I stand up for short durations.

The op was successful!

Due to some hyper-extension in my knee we decided with the surgeon to take a graft from my patella tendon (a strip of tendon from under the kneecap) with a bit of bone on either end. They then took that strip and transplanted it into my knee, attaching the bits of bone on the ends of the strip of tendon to pre drilled holes inside my knee, to create a new ACL ligament! Crazy stuff they can do ๐Ÿคฏ

Unfortunately the meniscus was far too damaged to repair, so the surgeon just cut out the damaged areas (meniscectomy).

Now is about pain management and regaining range of motion in the knee. I am walking about on crutches and I'm to put as much weight through it as pain allows. Alongside religiously sticking to my daily exercises from the physio, and the surgeons advice of course ๐Ÿ˜‰

Let's get this rehab underway!! ๐Ÿ’ช

As many of you will know, today was my last day in the clinic for a wee while as I recover from an ACL reconstruction surgery on Wednesday.

I originally injured my knee over 6 years ago and had to stop my sports. Back then it was a partial (near complete) tear of my ACL and a medial meniscus tear. But around 2 years ago I tore the thing completely and I decided to go ahead with the operation.

The plan is to return to the clinic in October and maybe sports in a year ๐Ÿ’ช

I will keep you updated on the progress so you can see me doing all the stuff I've been telling you all to do in this space for almost 3 years now ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you for all your support and best wishes!

See you again soon! ๐Ÿซก
