Endometriosis has been reported in the lungs, brain, and tissue surrounding the heart.

Calling it “a bad period” leaves out much of the disease.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it. These lesions can trigger inflammation, scarring, and adhesions, bands of tissue that can bind organs together.

It most often affects the pelvis, including the ovaries and areas around the bowel and bladder. But it can also occur beyond the reproductive organs.

In the chest, endometriosis can involve the diaphragm, lung tissue, or the lining around the lungs. It can cause chest pain, coughing up blood, or a collapsed lung, sometimes around menstruation.

Published case reports also describe endometriosis involving the pericardium, the sac around the heart. Cerebral endometriosis has been reported too, although it is exceptionally rare and some suspected cases lack confirmation from a tissue sample.

These unusual locations show how far the disease can reach. They do not mean everyone with endometriosis develops lesions throughout the body.

Even disease confined to the pelvis can cause debilitating pain, bowel and bladder symptoms, fatigue, and fertility problems. Pain can continue between periods.

Scientists are still investigating how endometriosis develops in different locations. Proposed explanations include cells traveling through blood or lymph and changes in cells already present outside the uterus. No single explanation accounts for every case.

The World Health Organization estimates that endometriosis affects about 190 million reproductive-age women worldwide.

There is currently no cure, although hormonal treatments, surgery, and pain care can help manage it.

Patients should not have to develop a rare complication to have their suffering taken seriously. Endometriosis deserves recognition as a serious chronic disease, wherever its lesions are found.
