⚠️ Chase Road temporarily closed following wildfire at Cannock Chase.

We’ve temporarily closed Chase Road, from the Camp Road turning to Brocton Nursery, after firefighters tackled a large blaze on Cannock Chase.

Crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue and
West Midlands Fire Service were called to the fire, which started from a disposable barbecue.

The fire damaged an area of heath and moorland in Sherbrook Valley, a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation.

Sadly, wildlife including adders and toads were killed, and valuable habitat has been lost.

The closure will remain in place until at least Monday 3 August while we reduce the risk of any remaining hotspots reigniting. We’ll review the situation and share updates when we can safely reopen the road.

If you use Chase Road, please make alternative travel plans over the weekend.

With dry conditions continuing across the region, we’re also reminding everyone to help prevent further fires:
🚫 Do not use barbecues or open flames on Cannock Chase or in country parks
🗑️ Take your litter home or use bins provided
🍾 Take extra care with glass, which can start fires in hot conditions

Disposable barbecues are banned on Cannock Chase for a reason.

This fire shows the devastating impact they can have on our wildlife, landscape and communities.

Today, we're discussing whether Britain is falling apart in the heatwave.

The record for the hottest June day has been broken again, reaching 36.7 degrees.

Schools are closing, trains are cancelled, thousands are under a hosepipe ban, and hospitals are declaring critical incidents.

We want to hear your experiences of the past week.

Anyone else have any tips for managing this type of weather and staying cool 😎 x

Much like this week, fifty years ago London baked in one of the hottest seasons of the 20th century.

The heatwave of 1976 brought temperatures regularly exceeding 30 degrees, severe drought, water rationing and forest fires across southern England. It was also linked to a significant rise in hospital admissions and a 20% increase in "excess deaths."

Half a century on, London is facing another serious heat event.

The Met Office has issued a Red weather warning for extreme heat across central and southern England and Wales, in effect from Wednesday morning through to Thursday evening. Unlike 1976, this heatwave is accompanied by exceptionally high humidity, making conditions significantly more oppressive than the temperature alone suggests.

The current UK June temperature record of 35.6°C, set that same summer, is now likely to be broken.
