A barber with a couple of years’ experience can be very talented, especially with modern trends, social media styles, and current techniques. But they can not and are certainly not in the position of the years of experience in the industry that us more experienced barbers are, Us old-school barbers often bring something different that only time can teach.

Some of the biggest differences are:

* Experience under the clippers: An old-school barber may have cut tens of thousands of heads over 20+ years, seeing every hair type, growth pattern, and challenge imaginable.
* Consistency: They can often produce a quality haircut day in, day out, regardless of the style requested.
* Speed and efficiency: Years behind the chair usually means they can work quickly without sacrificing quality.
* Customer service: Many experienced barbers build strong relationships with clients and know how to make people feel comfortable and valued.
* Problem-solving: Whether it’s a difficult crown, thinning hair, scars, or a style gone wrong elsewhere, experience helps them find solutions.
* Traditional techniques: Scissor-over-comb, clipper-over-comb, blending, and classic cuts are often second nature to old-school barbers.

That said, experience alone doesn’t make someone a great barber. A newer barber who is passionate, constantly learning, and dedicated to improving can be exceptional too …..

“There’s nothing wrong with being a new barber—we all started somewhere. But after 20+ years behind the chair, I’ve learned that barbering is about more than fades and trends. It’s understanding hair, people, and delivering consistency day after day. Experience doesn’t make you better than anyone else, but it teaches lessons that no course or video ever can.” ✂️💈

One of 16 haircuts I completed yesterday. 💈14 of my regular customers and I managed 2 Walkins 🫶🏽. From 8:30am - 17:00.

People often see the finished result but don’t always see the hours behind it. Barbering isn’t just cutting hair – it’s standing all day, staying focused, listening, chatting, creating, and giving every client the same level of care from the first haircut of the day to the last.

It’s hard work, it’s tiring, and some days you barely get time to sit down, but seeing clients leave feeling fresh and confident makes it all worthwhile.

A massive thank you to everyone who keeps me busy and supports Hebridean Barbers. Your loyalty never goes unnoticed. 🙏
