Not every issue with locs starts with maintenance, sometimes it starts with installation.

This client has micro locs with extensions. During her maintenance appointment, one of the biggest concerns we identified was that braiding hair had been added directly at the roots of her locs.

While braiding hair can be used to extend the length of locs, it should not be added at the root at installation. The root area is where your natural hair needs the freedom to mat, tangle and bond together during the loc’ing process. When braiding hair is added at the base, it can interfere with that process and make it more difficult for the natural hair to form and mature properly.

Another concern was the amount of extension hair used in certain areas. When excessive hair is added to a small section of natural hair, it creates unnecessary weight and tension on the strand. Over time, this imbalance can place stress on the roots and compromise the integrity of the loc.

For this maintenance, I interlocked her loose new growth to reconnect her natural hair and create a stronger foundation moving forward. As her hair continues to grow, the long-term goal will be to gradually cut away the braiding hair, so her natural locs can continue developing as intended.
