Does it hurt?

I was asked this question again today (not by this gentleman on the photo!) so I thought I’d answer it here.

Most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable their treatments are

A while ago I upgraded my topical numbing cream to make appointments even more comfortable and the feedback has been amazing.

Of course, everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but if fear of discomfort has been holding you back, don’t let it.

…That was one of the most unexpected things a patient has ever said to me! She even brought a photo taken 20 years ago, so we recreated the same angle and compared the two pics.

And she was right!

The area around her mouth really did look longer. But the reason wasn’t her lips (which she planned to get done). And it wasn’t the skin either🫠

One of the changes we rarely talk about is what happens to the facial skeleton as we age, basically our facial bones gradually lose volume and the support underneath the soft tissues changes as well.

We cannot restore lost bone.

There is no injectable treatment and no aesthetic procedure, unfortunately, that can bring back the facial bone that has naturally resorbed with age.

What we can do is restore balance with filler in the mid and lower face, rebalancing the proportions and recreating the harmony that has lost over time.

That was exactly my approach in this case🙏🏻

P.S. My patient wasn’t comfortable sharing her before-and-after photos and I completely respect that.

What surprised me was that she insisted I share her story instead😅

She said that for years she knew something had changed in her face, but she couldn’t explain what it was or why it was happening.

She thought other people might feel exactly the same. So if you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Something about my face feels different, but I can’t put my finger on it…” you’re probably not imagining it.

An aesthetic assessment is free at my clinic and it help to understand what has changed, why it has changed and what can realistically be improved.

Colleagues joke that I seem to operate like a content factory, but the reality is less efficient than it appears from the outside😅

The educational posts are one thing. The personal ones are a completely different story.

Those are never delegated. Every sentence is written by me, questioned by me, rewritten by me and, more often than not, completely restructured several times before I finally decide to post it.

I do run everything through spellcheck, of course. The problem is that after fixing all the mistakes, I usually end up rewriting half the post, which results in a fresh set of mistakes😂 I’m sorry, English is my second language!😂

But in general I care about these posts far more than I probably should.
Which is why I’m curious.

What would you actually like me to write about?

The longer I work in this industry, the more I realise that the actual injection is only a small part of the job🙈

Most of my work happens while I’m listening, observing, analysing, questioning my own assumptions and trying to understand not only what can be done, but what should be done.

Sometimes the most important decision is the treatment plan. Or changing the treatment plan, or sometimes realising that the original concern wasn’t the real concern at all🙈

The longer I work in this profession, the less I see aesthetic medicine as a collection of procedures and the more I see it as a process of decision-making.

The injection itself only takes a few minutes though😅
