Persistent pain is complex, and our approach to treating individuals with persistent pain should reflect that. Addressing only structural factors is not adequate, and looking for knots in the muscles or imbalances is too reductionistic. A massage on a sore muscle may feel good, but it doesn't help the individual in solving their problems long term. It doesn't promote the individual's resources for self management and coping, and can promote an external locus of control."
