💜 National Lipoedema Conference 2026 | The Role of Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Lipoedema Care

I was truly honoured to have the opportunity to speak at this year’s National Lipoedema Conference and to share the stage with so many professionals committed to improving our understanding and management of lipoedema.

Representing MLD Ireland, my part of our presentation focused on “The Role of Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Lipoedema Care.”

For me, the important message is not simply about a particular technique. It is about understanding where MLD can have a role within appropriate, individualised lipoedema care, recognising its limitations, maintaining professional standards, and ensuring that therapists have the education and clinical reasoning needed to support their patients safely.

What made this such a valuable conference was the opportunity to bring together patients, therapists, clinicians, researchers and surgeons — different perspectives, but ultimately a shared goal: better understanding, better standards and better care for people living with lipoedema.

A great conference, and a privilege for MLD Ireland to be part of the conversation. 💜

And to all the therapists working in lymphatic care: keep learning, keep questioning and keep raising the standard of our profession.

Now it’s our turn to take the stage!

Our presentation, “Symptom Management, Professional Standards & Post-Surgical Care,” was divided into two parts.

In this first short video, Antoinette O’Connor, Chairperson of MLD Ireland, explains the role of the society and, most importantly, why having a professional body matters.

For patients living with conditions such as lipoedema and lymphoedema, professional standards, appropriate education and properly trained therapists are essential parts of delivering safe, effective and evidence-informed care.

A very important message — and one at the heart of what MLD Ireland represents. 💜

Next up, I’ll share the second half of our presentation, where I focus on symptom management and post-surgical care.

Back to the clinical talks with Virginia Ziulu, Nutritional Therapist, opening her session:

“Lipoedema, Genetics & Nutrition: Understanding What You Can Influence.”

This first minute sets the scene for an important discussion around nutrition, genetics and lipoedema — and, importantly, where we may be able to make a difference.

Another valuable perspective on why lipoedema care needs to look at the whole patient, not simply one symptom or one treatment.

☕ A quick break from the presentations — but the learning continues!

A practical demonstration from medi looking at their “2 in 1” system, designed to make compression garments easier to put on and support patients with their day-to-day compression management.

It’s always valuable at conferences like this to see the industry and clinical sides come together — translating compression technology into practical solutions that patients can actually use in everyday life.

Because the best compression garment can only work when the patient can wear it, tolerate it and use it consistently. 🧦💜

The third presentation of the morning is from Dr. Giw Mostofizadeh-Haghighi on The LipLeg Study — the first randomised controlled trial in lipoedema surgery. Programme Printing Draft.pdf

In this short clip, the focus is on the study criteria and how the researchers compared people living with lipoedema with the general population and an obese population.

An important reminder of why good research matters: if we want to understand lipoedema properly, we need to understand what makes this patient population different — and what does not.

A little behind-the-scenes preparation as the MLD Ireland team gets ready for tomorrow’s National Lipoedema Conference 2026 at the Cork International Hotel.

Tomorrow will bring together patients, clinicians, researchers and healthcare professionals to explore lipoedema from many different perspectives — diagnosis, research, symptom management, conservative care, surgery and long-term patient support.

As part of the MLD Ireland Education Team, I’m delighted to be involved and looking forward to a full day of learning, discussion and sharing good clinical practice.

A Journey Back to Movement & Strength 🌿

Recovery is rarely about treating just one thing — sometimes we need to look at the whole picture. 💪

This patient is recovering following arterial surgery after an infection and reduced blood flow to the leg. Assessment identified reduced mobility, strength and muscle mass in the affected leg.

Our rehabilitation journey focuses on:

🦵 Mobilisation & articulation — helping restore natural range of motion.
🏋️ Individualised exercises — rebuilding strength and addressing muscular imbalance.
⚖️ Whole-body movement — improving function and reducing compensation.

Over the past two weeks, we celebrated a very special achievement as Oran and Erika completed their clinical hours and officially finished their Bachelor’s Degree in Osteopathy.

It has been a real privilege to watch them grow over the last five years. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment have been truly inspiring, and I have no doubt they have a bright future ahead as osteopaths. 👏

A big thank you as well to all the students who shared this journey, and to Linda, our amazing clerical officer, for her constant support in making the clinic such a welcoming place.
