One of the most surprising piercing aftercare stories we’ve come across came from a client who contacted us after developing a painful bump on her Bugadi piercing.

She had gotten the piercing done elsewhere and was advised to apply mustard oil to help it heal faster.

Unfortunately, fresh piercings need a clean healing environment. Heavy oils can trap dirt, moisture, and bacteria around the piercing site, potentially increasing irritation and making healing more difficult.

After using the oil, she noticed inflammation and a bump beginning to form around the piercing.

When she reached out to us, we advised her to:

• Keep the area clean and avoid applying any more oil.
• Use a proper piercing aftercare solution regularly.
• Monitor the swelling and irritation closely over the next few days.
• Seek medical attention from a dermatologist or physician if the bump continued to worsen or showed signs of infection.

Thankfully, many irritation bumps can improve when the source of irritation is removed and proper aftercare is followed. However, persistent bumps should always be evaluated by a medical professional.

The lesson?

Not every traditional remedy is suitable for a fresh piercing.

When in doubt, keep it clean, keep it simple, and follow professional piercing aftercare practices.

Here’s what to do (and what NOT to do):

✅ Keep your tattoo moisturized with a tattoo-friendly aftercare product.

✅ Stay hydrated. Healthy skin heals better.

✅ Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area.

✅ Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser.

❌ Don’t scratch it (even if you’re tempted).

❌ Don’t pick peeling skin or flakes.

❌ Avoid applying random oils, creams, or home remedies.

❌ Avoid hot showers and excessive sweating during the healing phase.

A healing tattoo may itch.
A healthy tattoo should never be scratched.
