In 2007, a 44-year-old French civil servant visited a hospital after experiencing mild weakness in his left leg. Brain scans revealed something doctors never expected: severe hydrocephalus had caused his skull to become largely occupied by cerebrospinal fluid, compressing his brain tissue into a remarkably thin layer around the inside of his cranium. The condition had developed gradually after he received a shunt during infancy and had it revised at age 14.

Despite the extraordinary appearance of his brain scans, the man had lived a largely independent and ordinary life. He was married, raised two children, maintained a steady government job, and showed no major neurological problems beyond having an IQ of approximately 75. His case was later published in The Lancet and became one of the most famous examples of the brain’s ability to adapt to gradual physical changes.

The case did not mean he was literally functioning without a brain. Instead, much of his brain tissue had been severely compressed over decades, giving it time to reorganize and preserve many essential abilities. It remains a powerful demonstration of neuroplasticity and how differently the human brain can respond when change happens slowly.

Dr Sidney | Orthopaedic Surgeon- This is a tibia fracture previously treated with an intramedullary nail, an implant that is placed inside the bone to keep it aligned during consolidation.

Subsequently, the patient suffered a new trauma, which caused a refracture of the tibia.

The force of the impact also produced deformation or angulation of the intramedullary nail, which normally acts as internal support for the bone. 🦴
