Ayurveda Day: What Is Your Daily Life Doing to Your Health?

For many years, we Ayurvedic physicians celebrated Ayurveda Day on Dhantrayodashi, offering prayers to Lord Dhanvantari on his jayanti. The observance now has a fixed date: 23 September. The date has changed; the question Ayurveda asks each of us has not. Are the choices we repeat every day helping us live well?

On this Ayurveda Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi shared a verse from the Charaka Samhita:

हिताहितं सुखं दुःखमायुस्तस्य हिताहितम्।
मानं च तच्च यत्रोक्तमायुर्वेदः स उच्यते।।

In essence, Ayurveda examines life itself: what supports it, what harms it, what makes it fulfilling or difficult, and how we may care for it wisely.

That is a much bigger subject than a bottle of medicine.

When a patient visits me with acidity, poor sleep or persistent tiredness, I want to know more than the name of the symptom. When do they eat? How long do they sit? What happens between switching off the lights and actually sleeping? Which worries follow them to bed?

These questions matter because health is lived between appointments.

Ayurveda calls attention to dinacharya, our daily routine, and to differences between individuals. A useful routine should suit the person, their health needs and their circumstances. Small, sustainable changes are often easier to keep than an ambitious routine attempted for three days.

Start with an honest look at one ordinary day. Give yourself enough time to eat without rushing. Make room for movement that suits your ability. Protect your sleep. If your mind rarely gets a quiet moment, begin with a few minutes of comfortable breathing or meditation. Then choose one habit you can repeat tomorrow.

And please do not mistake “natural” for “safe for everyone.” Ayurvedic medicines can have risks, and a persistent symptom deserves proper assessment. If you have an existing condition or take prescribed medicines, discuss any new preparation with qualified clinicians. Do not stop essential treatment on your own.

As we remember Lord Dhanvantari today, let our respect for Ayurveda extend beyond the prayer and into daily life. You do not need to perfect your routine overnight. You need to notice what is helping, recognise what is harming, and take the next sensible step.

Ayurveda Day lasts one day. The life it asks us to care for is lived every day.

Are Ghee and Clarified Butter same?

They are very similar but not exactly the same. In short: All ghee is clarified butter, but not all clarified butter is ghee. Here is the breakdown of the differences:
They are very similar, but not exactly the same.

In short: All ghee is clarified butter, but not all clarified butter is ghee.

Here's a breakdown of the differences:

🧈 Clarified Butter (General Term)

* Process: Made by melting butter and skimming off the milk solids and water. The process is stopped as soon as the milk solids separate.

* Flavor: Has a mild, pure, buttery flavor.

* Use: Often associated with French cooking (like for hollandaise sauce or dipping lobster).

✨ Ghee (A Type of Clarified Butter)

* Process: The butter is cooked longer than clarified butter. It's simmered until the milk solids not only separate but also brown and caramelize at the bottom of the pan before being strained out.

* Flavor: This extra cooking time gives it a distinct, rich, and nutty aroma and flavor.

* Use: Originated in India and is a staple in South Asian cuisine. It's great for high-heat cooking like sautéing and frying due to its higher smoke point.

🔑 Key Similarities

Both ghee and clarified butter share a high smoke point (much higher than regular butter) because the milk solids and water have been removed, leaving almost pure butterfat. This makes both excellent for cooking at high temperatures.

So, while they are made the same way (removing milk solids and water from butter), ghee is cooked for an extra step to develop a nuttier flavor and darker color.
