💪🏽🥚 PROTEIN & YOUR HAIR: THE CONNECTION YOU SHOULD KNOW
When we talk about healthy, strong hair, we often focus on oils, creams, shampoos and treatments. But there’s something important happening from the inside: your body needs enough protein to build and maintain healthy hair.
🧬 WHY DOES HAIR NEED PROTEIN?
Hair is made primarily of a protein called keratin. Your body uses amino acids—the building blocks of protein—to make keratin and support the growth and maintenance of hair.
That means your daily diet can play an important role in giving your body the nutrients it needs for normal hair growth.
🍳 GOOD SOURCES OF PROTEIN
You don't need expensive foods or fancy supplements. Everyday foods can contribute protein to your diet:
🥚 Eggs
🐔 Chicken
🐟 Fish
🥩 Lean meat
🥛 Milk and yoghurt
🫘 Beans
🌱 Lentils
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🧀 Cheese
🌱 Soy foods such as tofu
🌿 PLANT-BASED PROTEIN COUNTS TOO!
If you don't eat much meat, you can combine different plant foods throughout the day—such as beans, lentils, peas, nuts, seeds and whole grains—to help meet your protein needs.
⚠️ WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON'T GET ENOUGH?
When the body doesn't receive enough protein or other essential nutrients, it may prioritize vital functions over things like hair production. In some people, significant nutritional deficiencies can contribute to increased shedding or changes in hair quality.
But remember: hair shedding has many possible causes. Stress, hormonal changes, illness, certain medications, genetics and other nutritional deficiencies can also play a role.
💡 SO SHOULD YOU TAKE PROTEIN POWDERS FOR HAIR?
Not necessarily.
If you're already getting enough protein from a balanced diet, adding a protein powder specifically for your hair isn't automatically going to make your hair grow faster.
Think balanced nutrition first, supplements only when there is a genuine need.
✨ THE BIG TAKEAWAY
Beautiful hair isn't created only in the bathroom.
Your hair routine matters—but so does what you put on your plate. 🍽️💜
Give your body the building blocks it needs, take care of your scalp, protect your strands and be consistent.
Healthy hair is a whole-body routine. 🌱✨

💜 KERATIN TREATMENT vs PROTEIN TREATMENT — ARE THEY THE SAME? 💜

They sound similar, but not every keratin treatment is the same as a protein treatment! 👀

✨ KERATIN TREATMENT
Keratin is a protein naturally found in hair. Salon keratin treatments are often designed to smooth the hair, reduce frizz and make styling easier. Depending on the formula, they may also involve chemical processing and high heat.

✨ PROTEIN TREATMENT
Protein treatments are generally used to help hair that feels weak, overly stretchy or prone to breakage. They temporarily reinforce the hair and can improve its strength and feel.

⚠️ DON'T OVERDO PROTEIN!
Too much protein can leave some hair feeling stiff, rough, dry or brittle.

💡 THE GOLDEN RULE:
Your hair needs a balance of strength + moisture.

If your hair is dry, don't automatically assume it needs more protein. And if it's weak and overly stretchy, adding moisture alone may not be the answer.

👉🏽 Know what your hair needs before choosing a treatment!

Healthy hair isn't about using MORE products—it's about using the RIGHT products at the RIGHT time. 💜

💜 KERATIN TREATMENT: WHO SHOULD USE IT & WHO SHOULD BE CAREFUL? 💜

Keratin treatments can make hair look smoother, shinier and easier to manage—but they aren't suitable for every head of hair.

✨ MAY BENEFIT:
• Frizzy or difficult-to-manage hair
• Hair that tangles easily
• Hair that needs smoother-looking results
• Those who want to reduce styling time

⚠️ BE CAREFUL IF:
• Your hair is severely damaged or breaking
• Your scalp is irritated or has open sores
• Your hair has recently undergone several chemical treatments
• You are unsure what chemicals are in the product

🚨 IMPORTANT:
“Keratin” does NOT automatically mean a treatment is gentle or chemical-free. Some smoothing treatments contain strong chemicals or release irritating fumes when heated.

💡 Before a treatment: Check the ingredient list, follow the product instructions, and consider a strand test—especially if your hair is already fragile.

Remember: Smooth hair is beautiful, but healthy hair comes first. 💜

💜 KERATIN & YOUR HAIR: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW 💜

Keratin is a protein that naturally makes up a large part of your hair. It helps give hair its strength, structure and resilience.

But when people say “keratin treatment,” they can mean different things. Some salon treatments are designed to smooth and reduce frizz, while others are marketed as protein treatments.

✨ Potential benefits of a keratin smoothing treatment:
• Smoother-looking hair
• Reduced frizz
• More shine
• Easier detangling and styling
• Hair may feel softer and more manageable

⚠️ But here's the important part:
Not every keratin treatment is the same. Some chemical smoothing formulas can be harsh, especially when combined with high heat. Always check the ingredients and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

And remember: keratin doesn't magically “repair” damaged hair permanently. Hair is already non-living once it grows out of the scalp, so treatments mainly improve its appearance and feel.

💡 Hair tip: Healthy hair isn't about using the strongest treatment—it's about using the right treatment for your hair's condition.

💆🏾‍♀️ SCALP MASSAGE: A SIMPLE STEP FOR A HEALTHIER SCALP
Did you know that a few minutes of gentle scalp massage can be a great addition to your hair-care routine? 👀✨
🌿 Benefits of scalp massage
✨ May improve blood circulation
Gentle massage stimulates the scalp and may temporarily increase blood flow to the area.
✨ Helps you relax 😌
A scalp massage can relieve tension and feel incredibly soothing—especially after a long day.
✨ Helps distribute scalp oils
Massaging gently can help spread natural oils from the scalp along the hair, especially when done before washing.
✨ Helps loosen buildup
A gentle massage while shampooing can help loosen sweat, oil and product residue from the scalp.
✨ Can make your routine more enjoyable 🥰
Healthy hair care isn't only about products. Consistent, gentle scalp care matters too.
🫳🏾 HOW TO DO IT
Use the pads of your fingertips, not your nails.
Start at the front of the scalp and work toward the back.
Use small, gentle circular movements.
Massage for about 3–5 minutes.
Don't scratch, pull or aggressively rub the scalp.
🚨 Remember: More pressure doesn't mean more benefits. If your scalp hurts, feels irritated or becomes sore, stop.
Healthy hair starts with caring for the scalp too. 🌱❤️

🧖🏾‍♀️🥚 DIY PROTEIN TREATMENT FOR NATURAL HAIR — EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Is your hair breaking easily? Does it feel weak, limp, overly stretchy when wet, or damaged from heat, colouring, relaxing or frequent manipulation?

Your hair may benefit from an occasional protein treatment. Protein treatments can temporarily help strengthen and reinforce the hair shaft, but they are NOT something you should keep doing every wash day. Too much protein can leave the hair feeling hard, dry, rough and more prone to breakage. ⚠️

🥚 SIMPLE DIY PROTEIN TREATMENT

You will need:
• 1 egg
• 2–3 tablespoons plain unsweetened yoghurt
• 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil
• 1 teaspoon honey — optional

🥣 Mix everything until smooth.

HOW TO USE IT

1️⃣ Start with clean, damp hair.
2️⃣ Divide your hair into sections.
3️⃣ Apply the mixture mainly to the hair strands, especially damaged areas.
4️⃣ Cover with a plastic/shower cap.
5️⃣ Leave it on for about 15–20 minutes. Don't leave an egg-based protein mask overnight.
6️⃣ Rinse thoroughly with cool to lukewarm water. PLEASE don't use hot water unless you want scrambled eggs on your head! 😂🥚
7️⃣ Follow with a good moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioner.
8️⃣ Let your hair dry gently and avoid excessive heat immediately afterward.

🗓️ HOW OFTEN?

Don't automatically make this a weekly treatment!

👉🏾 Damaged, chemically treated or frequently heat-styled hair: you may start around every 2–4 weeks, depending on how your hair responds.

👉🏾 Healthy hair: much less often may be enough.

👉🏾 First time trying it? Start conservatively and observe your hair before repeating.

The stronger the protein treatment, the less frequently it should generally be used. Professional guidance also recommends easing into protein treatments because overuse can make hair brittle.

🚨 WHEN YOUR HAIR MAY NEED PROTEIN

Look for signs such as:

✔️ Excessive stretch when wet
✔️ Hair feels weak and limp
✔️ Increased breakage
✔️ Hair has been heavily coloured, relaxed or heat damaged
✔️ Hair feels unusually soft and lacks strength

BUT don't diagnose your hair from ONE sign alone. Your hair may simply need moisture or gentler handling.

💦 WHEN YOUR HAIR NEEDS MOISTURE INSTEAD

If your hair feels:

❌ Dry
❌ Hard
❌ Rough
❌ Stiff
❌ Brittle
❌ Difficult to detangle

STOP adding more protein and concentrate on moisturizing and conditioning.

Protein and moisture are partners — your hair doesn't need one fighting the other. 😌

🚫 WHEN TO AVOID THIS DIY TREATMENT

❌ If you have an egg or dairy allergy/sensitivity
❌ If your scalp is irritated, scratched or inflamed
❌ If your hair is already extremely dry, hard or brittle
❌ If you've recently done another strong protein/reconstructing treatment
❌ If your hair is responding badly to protein
❌ Don't use it as a treatment for unexplained hair loss

If you're experiencing significant or persistent hair loss, don't rely on kitchen treatments. Hair loss can have many causes and is worth discussing with a dermatologist.

⚠️ IMPORTANT!

Protein treatment ≠ hair-growth treatment.

It may help improve the feel, strength and manageability of damaged hair, but putting an egg on your hair has NOT been proven to make your hair grow faster. The evidence for topical egg treatments is limited.

And please remember:

🌿 Natural does not automatically mean suitable for everyone.

Always patch-test new ingredients if you're prone to reactions, and stop if you experience itching, burning or irritation.

✨ Strong hair still needs moisture.
Moisturized hair still needs gentle handling.
And healthy hair does NOT need every DIY recipe TikTok throws at it! 😂❤️

🌿🎨 NATURAL HAIR DYES: COLOUR YOUR HAIR THE NATURAL WAY! 😍✨

Who said colouring your hair always means reaching for strong chemical dyes? 🤔

There are plant-based options that can give your hair beautiful tones while also offering some conditioning benefits. 🌿❤️

Here are some popular natural colourants and the shades they can give you:

🌿 1. HENNA — COPPER, RED OR AUBURN ❤️🧡

Henna is one of the most popular natural hair colourants.

✨ Colour: Copper, orange-red, auburn or reddish-brown, depending on your starting hair colour and how you use it.

💚 Benefits:
• Can make hair feel thicker and fuller
• Adds shine
• Coats the hair shaft
• Can improve the appearance of dry, dull hair

⚠️ Henna is NOT a hair-lightener. It cannot turn naturally dark hair blonde.

🌿 2. INDIGO — BROWN TO VERY DARK/BLACK 💙🖤

Indigo is a plant dye commonly used alone or together with henna.

✨ Colour: Blue-toned staining on its own; when combined with henna, it can produce brown, deep brown and very dark shades.

💚 Benefits:
• Plant-based colour
• Can give hair a glossy appearance
• Useful for creating darker shades when paired with henna

🌿 3. CASSIA — GOLDEN/YELLOWISH TONES ✨🌼

Sometimes called “neutral henna,” although it is actually a different plant.

✨ Colour: Usually subtle golden or yellow tones, especially on lighter/grey hair. On dark hair, the colour may be barely noticeable.

💚 Benefits:
• Can make hair feel smoother
• Adds shine
• Often used as a conditioning herbal treatment

🌿 4. HIBISCUS — RED/BURGUNDY TONES 🌺❤️

Hibiscus is traditionally used as a natural hair colourant, often alongside henna.

✨ Colour: Reddish, burgundy or wine-like tones, but the colour is generally less predictable and less permanent than henna.

💚 Benefits:
• Contains plant compounds with antioxidant properties
• Can add shine
• Gives a beautiful natural-looking reddish tint

🌿 5. AMLA — DEEPER, COOLER TONES 🍃🤎

Amla isn't usually a strong standalone dye, but it is traditionally combined with henna and other herbs.

✨ Colour: It can help influence henna results toward deeper, less-orange/browner tones.

💚 Benefits:
• Traditionally used in Ayurvedic hair care
• Can help hair feel conditioned
• Often used in herbal hair treatments

🌿 6. WALNUT HUSK — BROWN/DARK BROWN 🤎🌰

Walnut husk has traditionally been used to stain hair darker.

✨ Colour: Brown to deeper brown, depending on the preparation and your natural hair colour.

💚 Benefits:
• Plant-based colouring option
• Can give hair a rich, earthy-looking tone

🎨 WHY CHOOSE NATURAL HAIR COLOUR?

Natural plant dyes can be attractive if you want to:

✨ Reduce your use of conventional permanent dyes
✨ Add colour without bleaching the hair
✨ Enhance shine and the appearance of fullness
✨ Experiment with warm, earthy shades
✨ Combine colouring with a conditioning herbal routine

BUT LADIES… 🚨🌿

“Natural” does NOT automatically mean “allergy-proof”!

Always do a patch test before using a new plant dye, and preferably test it on a small section of hair first. Results can vary depending on your natural hair colour, previous dye/chemical treatments, porosity and the ingredients used.

🚨 AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH “BLACK HENNA.”

Some products sold as black henna contain PPD (paraphenylenediamine), a chemical that can cause serious skin reactions. Don't assume something is safe simply because the package says “henna.”

🌿🎨 Natural colour can be beautiful—but healthy hair comes first! ❤️

Which shade would YOU choose? 👇🏽😍
🧡 Copper
❤️ Red
🤎 Brown
🖤 Very dark
🌺 Burgundy
