Timbuktu, in present-day Mali, developed as a commercial centre around the 11th century and later became a major centre of Islamic learning. From at least the 14th century, scholars and scribes were writing and copying books there. Manuscripts covered subjects far beyond religious studies, including law, astronomy, mathematics, ethics, politics and literature. Many manuscripts were preserved by private families and libraries rather than by a single central institution. The Library of Congress holds digitized examples from Timbuktu collections and describes the manuscripts as evidence of a long-established written intellectual tradition in West Africa. UNESCO has also worked on preserving and providing access to this manuscript heritage.

Great Zimbabwe β€” The African Empire That Traded With the World

Long before European colonial powers reached southern Africa, Great Zimbabwe was already part of a vast international trading network.

Built between roughly 1100 and 1450 CE, Great Zimbabwe became one of the most important political and economic centers of medieval southern Africa. Its enormous dry-stone walls, including the famous Great Enclosure, were constructed by indigenous Shona-speaking communities.

But the most fascinating evidence comes from what archaeologists found there.

Chinese porcelain, Persian ceramics, glass beads and a coin from Kilwa on the East African coast have been discovered at the site. These objects reveal that Great Zimbabwe was connected to the wider Indian Ocean trading world, with goods moving between Africa, Arabia, Persia, India and China.

For a long time, colonial-era theories wrongly claimed that such monumental architecture could not have been built by Africans themselves. Archaeology has decisively rejected that idea.

Great Zimbabwe was an indigenous African achievement and a powerful center of trade, politics and craftsmanship.
