The Sand Bar Story — Or, How Médano Got Its Name Right

Every institution on Médano Beach has an origin story, but few are as unlikely — or as honest — as The Sand Bar’s. Long before it earned its spot as a Médano fixture, it was nothing more than grit, hustle, and a family betting on the sand itself.

Juancho and his wife Doris didn’t set out to build a beach club. In the mid-1990s, they were just trying to make rent. Juancho ran local boat tours by day; in the gaps, he and Doris sold hot dogs and cold beers out of coolers, working under a single umbrella next to a battered three-legged iron table that had clearly seen better decades. No permanent structure. No branding. Just two people and the sand.

The turn came in 1998, and it came from Doris. On weekends, the husbands planted themselves in front of the football games, leaving their wives to find their own entertainment on the beach. Doris saw the opening and built something around it — an informal service she called “Get Hammered While You Get Nailed,” pairing a foot or leg massage and a pedicure with a bucket of cold beers or a proper margarita. It caught on immediately, and it never really stopped. What began as a weekend experiment became the blueprint for Médano’s now-iconic open-air massage deck — the thing that turned a beachside watering hole into a two-sided destination, where you could eat, watch the bay, and get worked on, all without leaving the sand.

Spend enough time with the old guard on Médano and you start to understand why places like The Sand Bar outlast the tourism trends that swallow everything around them: loyalty, on both sides of the bar. Management has changed hands over the years, the kitchen staff has turned over — that’s the nature of the business. But underneath it all sits a core of long-timers, several of whom have worked beside Juancho and Doris for decades, holding the whole operation together — running the beach service at full tilt, keeping a vetted battalion of massage therapists moving smoothly across the upper deck, day after day, season after season.
