Rachel Wong is one of Malaysia's most exciting makeup artists. She is highly skilled, restlessly creative and truly loves her line of work. To her, makeup is about individuality and freedom of expression. Her work never gets mundane or predictable and every shoot or show is different. There are no rules or boundaries, just endless possibilities. She says:
"Sometimes people see my fantasy work for
the fashion industry and find it intimidating or feel that is not the kind of look they want for a particular occasion. In fact, I've done almost every kind of makeup and any good pro can do a range of work from beauty to striking. For me, they are not so different. Of course, its true that simple beauty makeup uses less creative juice than more avant garde stuff but you still need to think about your model, her colouring, her face shape, the lighting, her outfit and her personal style. You still need to work to find a look that works for that person at that moment." Rachel learned her craft at Zig Image & Education Academy, at MAC Cosmetic and an beauty airbrushing make up training in London Make Up School. Before she went freelance, she worked for Stila (2 years) then MAC (3 years) but still managed to fit in runway shows, theatre, make-up workshop, TV, awards ceremonies & product launches. Now that she is freelance, she can be much more prolific. Her freelance career focuses on weddings ;fashion photography; editorial & TVC. Her creative influences come from the history of makeup and direct from nature. Art imitates life. "Its been a roller coaster ride. Sometimes the work is pretty straightforward and sometimes it stretches the limits of my creative vision. Sometimes there just aren't enough hours in a day. What I can say is that some people in the Malaysian fashion industry have been incredibly welcoming. Its been a thrill to work with some of the most talented and high-profile designers, models and photographers around." That is not a surprise because as well as doing technically flawless and strikingly original work, Rachel really knows how to put models and photographers at ease.
