As a plastic surgeon, events like these reinforce the importance of restoring not only form, but confidence and quality of life. Breast reconstruction is about so much more than surgery—it’s about helping patients move forward with hope, dignity, and renewed self-belief.

PINNAPLASTY / OTOPLASTY FOR PROMINENT EAR CORRECTION

A pinnaplasty, also known as an otoplasty, is a procedure performed to correct ear deformities. These can vary considerably, but the most common concern is prominent ears. Ear prominence is typically caused by an underdeveloped antihelical fold, a deep conchal bowl, or, in some cases, a combination of both.

This lovely young lady came to see me because she had been self-conscious about her prominent ears since childhood. She often wore her hair down to conceal them and felt uncomfortable drawing attention to her ears.

After a detailed consultation, I performed a pinnaplasty under local anaesthesia. The procedure involved creating and defining the antihelical fold that had been lacking, thereby improving the ear’s contour and reducing its prominence.

The result is a natural-looking ear shape that sits closer to the head and is in better balance with her facial features. Most importantly, she now feels confident wearing her hair up without worrying about the appearance of her ears.

Both she and I are delighted with the outcome, and it has been wonderful to see the positive impact this procedure has had on her confidence and quality of life.

Filomena Mauranik De Jesus travelled from Timor-Leste requiring highly specialised surgical care for a rare and complex breast condition that had progressed significantly and taken a toll on her quality of life. By the first day following surgery, Filomena was mobilising well, marking an important step forward in her recovery.
