🌿 MONDAY — Know Your Vegetable

You probably know Ugu as that leafy green your mother adds to soup… but have you ever actually wondered what makes it Ugu? 👀🌿

Ugu, scientifically known as Telfairia occidentalis, is a leafy vegetable native to West Africa and is particularly popular in Nigerian cuisine.

Beyond adding colour and flavour to soups, Ugu leaves are eaten as part of different traditional meals and can contribute useful nutrients to the diet.

One interesting thing about Ugu is that both its leaves and seeds are used. While the leaves are commonly consumed as a vegetable, the seeds are also edible and have been traditionally used in various food preparations.

So the next time you see that familiar green leaf in your soup, remember: you're not just looking at "leaf." You're looking at a plant with nutritional and cultural importance. 🌱

Your health, our priority. ❤️

🍎 Know Your Fruit: Apple

Botanical name: Malus domestica

Family: Rosaceae (rose family)

Species: Malus domestica is the cultivated/domesticated apple. There are also several wild Malus species, but most apples eaten commercially come from M. domestica and its hybrids.

Apple trees grow best when they have:

☀️ Full sunlight: Ideally 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

🌡️ Cool winters: Most apple varieties need a period of winter chilling to flower and fruit properly. The exact requirement varies by cultivar.

🌱 Well-drained, fertile soil: Slightly acidic to neutral soil, roughly pH 6.0–7.0, works well.

💧 Regular moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during establishment and fruit development, but avoid waterlogging.

🌬️ Good airflow: Helps reduce fungal diseases.

🐝 Pollination: Many apple varieties produce more fruit when another compatible apple variety is nearby for cross-pollination.

✂️ Pruning: Regular pruning helps sunlight reach the canopy and encourages healthy fruit production.

From seed to apple: You can grow an apple from its seed, but the resulting tree may not produce fruit identical to the apple you ate(Because an apple seed is the product of sexual reproduction 🍎It has the genetic material of both parents🌱 ).

Commercial apples are commonly propagated by grafting a desired variety onto suitable rootstock, which also produces fruit much sooner.

Fun fact: 🍎 An apple tree grown from seed can take several years often 6–10 years or more to begin producing fruit, while grafted trees can often fruit within 2–5 years, depending on the variety and rootstock.
