The Potential In AgriBusiness Is Huge
This story is another example
In 2017, 22- years year old Olasunkanmi Owoyemi took a leap of faith by borrowing 50 million naira loan from Fidelity Bank to start an agro-export business known as Sunbeth Global Concepts.
The business was founded to export agro cash crops like cocoa and soya beans to the global market.
Today, the business has grown.
In 2024, Sunbeth Global Concepts, run by now 30-year-old Nigerian Olasunkanmi Owoyemi, exported cocoa worth $152 million, making it Nigeria’s eighth-largest non-oil exporter.
For proper context, Owoyemi's business made more income from exporting cocoa than Dangote Cement did last year from their export business.
From its humble beginnings, Sunbeth Global Concepts now controls 10% of the cocoa market export in Nigeria.
At the helm is 30-year-old Olasunkanmi Owoyemi, who believes cocoa could one day overtake oil as the country’s main source of export revenue.
Despite his young age, Owoyemi is no newcomer.
As a child, he sat on the board of Sunny Owo Ventures, his father’s cocoa-trading firm, long before he could read or write.
By the time he graduated in 2014, he had already made up his mind: he would run his own commodity-trading business.
A loan from Fidelity Bank helped him launch Sunbeth Global Concepts, which became the export arm of the family business.
“I was fortunate to grow up in an environment that exposed me early to business,” he says. “Working in my parents’ warehouses gave me hands-on experience and insight into the raw processes of the cocoa trade.”
Under his leadership, Sunbeth has expanded fast.
The firm has exported more than 150,000 tonnes of cocoa beans to major chocolate producers around the world and now holds around 10% of Nigeria’s cocoa export market.
Support systems for Nigeria’s farmers
In 2017, the company’s turnover was just N50 million.
By 2024, it was exporting $152 million worth of cocoa, according to the Nigerian Export Promotion Council – and could exceed that figure if barriers to investment are removed, particularly with world cocoa prices surging.
“As we’ve seen in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, where support systems are in place, cocoa exports have become major sources of income,” Owoyemi says.
“With the right investment and policy, agriculture in Nigeria could match – and eventually surpass – oil.”
Nigeria’s cocoa sector is at a crossroads, shaped by high global prices, falling domestic output, and long-standing structural weaknesses.
Once a global leader, the country now lags behind Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Ecuador, with annual production falling to around 350,000 tonnes.
The recent global price surge – driven by supply shocks, climate volatility, and environmental degradation in West Africa – has renewed calls for Nigeria to revive the sector.
Yet challenges persist: ageing trees, poor infrastructure, weak access to finance, and worsening insecurity have made farming increasingly difficult.
Hurdles to growth
Sunbath’s rise has not been immune to these challenges.
High interest rates, poor infrastructure, and a lack of skilled workers have all constrained growth.
“Access to affordable capital is a constant problem,” Owoyemi says. “This is especially true in sectors like agro-exports, which require large upfront spending.” To deal with some of these issues, Sunbeth has set up a group of subsidiaries to manage ancillary operations.
Together, they employ 500 people.
The company avoided rigid long-term plans. Instead, it adapted its strategy to suit changing conditions.
“Our growth has come from staying flexible,” he says. “Each new business unit was created to solve a specific problem.
Sunbeth Shipping handles logistics.
Sunbeth Energies supports our energy needs.”
What comes next?
For now, Sunbeth remains focused on Nigeria. Owoyemi says plans to expand elsewhere in West Africa are still on the drawing board.
He argues that if Nigeria wants to increase cocoa production, the priority must be to give farmers access to cheaper credit.
Most cannot afford better seedlings, fertiliser, or machinery. “Without that, output stays low,” he says.
Equally important, he adds, is building a transparent and efficient system to manage such support – one that ensures money reaches those doing the work. “If we get that right,” Owoyemi says, “we’ll see a big jump in production.”
